I figured I'd save any newbies from an archive search. On a serious note, I wanted to check out the public polling feature, so beware if you are a secretive useless poll devotee.

That in my opinion is one of the toughest calls to make. They are both the best in 357 revolvers. The Smith has an awesome trigger out the box, the Ruger is built like a tank, and accurate to boot. Either pick is a good one. I had both, had to make the choice. The Smith lost, i picked a colt45, Lightweight Commander. Still have the Ruger Gp100. You cannot go wrong with either revolvers. :)

I really don't think you could wear out a 686, but good luck trying to. I prefer the ergonomics and the trigger of the 686 it gets my vote.

Both'll chew up anything you feed them and will be shooting long after you are gone.

I voted for the one that fits my hand better, looks better, and has a proper leaf spring for a mainspring. ;)

For me its the 6" Smith & Wesson 686-5 .357 magnum

I love them both -- plus N Frame 27s, 28s and 627s -- but if I were compelled to own only one it would be my 30+ year old, P&R'ed 27-2 . . . and if I were forced to chose between the 686/681/581/586 and the GP100, I would opt for the Ruger, since you can always develop (use plus Wolfe) the s-m-o-o-t-h trigger, but not the extra strength.

I voted for the 686, even though I have a 4" 586 (best out of the box trigger ever), but I also have a 4" GP100. The grip on the Ruger is the best grip on a factory gun that I can think of. I have kept the factory springs on the Ruger, thus giving a smooth but heavier trigger pull (like most handguns the more you shoot 'em, the smoother they become). Tomorrow I might vote for the Ruger. You can't lose with either.

Well, I sold a 581 to get a GP. For me the sights on the Ruger work better. I've found the GP is one of the most accurate revolvers I have and I really enjoy shooting it. Mine's a 4" with full lug. I carry it in a belt holster made by a friend so that has added some good sentimental value as well.

Why chose? I have one of each. The GP points better and feels better in my hand. 686 has the trigger. Both are fun.

Voted "other"

Like RWK, I like the 586-686 platform but have issues with the 686 longevity.

Under "other" I would opt for 586.

I have both and am equally impressed with each. Hard to tell which is the better gun in my opinion. I'll keep both but my wife has been eyeing the GP100.
