62gr SS109 Expensive now and .308 cheaper than dirt?

I just saw on CheaperThanDirt.com that they're selling 55gr .223 from South Africa, (PMP?) at $39.95 for a 300 round battle pack. That's approximately $120.00 for 900 rounds, but if you have one of the fast twist (1-7) rifles, the 55gr bullet may do you no good.

No I don't see much of it out there either. Since the Military upgraded to the 62gr I haven't seen as much good 55gr ammo. I like the Winchester Ammo but its not around in bulk much. I noticed AmmoMan selling the 62gr American Eagle ammo ,first time I've ever seen that. I reload the 62gr Steel Core ammo because its still very much worth while to do so. But if its going to be steel core its got to be able to do what its suppose to do. It would be nice If THE FIRING LINE had an Ammo Review from TFLers. We have a Photo page how about an Ammo Review Page?

Yes I do have a newer Mini-14 and it does have the faster twist rate.

Soda Pop, sorry for the delay in answering. The Mrs. and I spent the day hand linking ammo for the M1919. :) Anyway, the consensus at AR15.com on Spanish SS109 is that it is a little less accurate than the IMI and GI stuff but will do well enough for combat purposes. There have been several discussion threads on Spanish SS109 on that website if you care to go into more detail. For the money, it is a sleeper of a deal at Ammoman IMHO. It is what we will feed our CAR-15 for SHTF. We use the brass case S&B 55 grain for target shooting.

The messages about avoiding Russian ammo and guns to avoid "financing" them are really amusing. Our government is giving tons of money to the Russians to help them disable their nukes, the least we can do is get something useful for the money we spend! :)

Good cheap ammo is just that, good cheap ammo. As long a the money does not go to Hand Gun Control INC. or Rosie Odonnell I could care less!

I bought 1K of the Spanish SS109 from Eric, as far as defense and blasting ammo, it works great. Not as accurate for match, but that's not it's purpose.

Bushmaster XM15 E2S, which is a 1:9 20" HBar, the only modification I made so far was a smaller aperature and post, which improved my ability to be more accurate. A new trigger may come next year. This gun is shoots very well, an inch or better from a 100 yard bench w/hornady 52 gr Amax. I wish I could hold that well off hand, but I don't do too badly, <G>, Spanish stuff is usually under 2 inches.

Keep shooting,
