617 - 5 Pitted Barrel??

Actually, Lewis Lead remover can be used in a .22. All you need to do is obtain some of the brass screens for a larger caliber and use one of the tools in your .22 cal cleaning kit. the blunt one, don't know the specific name for it, it can be used to push stuck bullets out when you have a misfire, primer only.

Push a screen from a 38/9mm kit, it will work. Don't get the whole kit, just the screens.

No luck

Well, folks, I tried the goops and cloths and the like, and took it back to the gun shop. The guy there tried some foam and goop and sprays and brushes...no luck, so I'm thinking it is not fouling. He suggested shooting some CCI Stingers through it as they are hotter and check to see if it is better/worse/same afterwards. And if we can't figure it out, we'll send it back to S&W.

Thanks again for all the good advice. If nothing else, I found some excellent new cleaning products, and learned that most .22 shooters don't clean the barrel much anyway!

Can you post a picture. Shine some light on the breech face with the cylinder open. Then take the picture through the muzzle held far enough away to focus. BTW, turn the flash off so you are getting the reflected light through the barrel.

The only problem I have had with leading in my .22s Ruger MKIIs and S&W 617 barrels was because of the ammo. I stopped using the particular ammo that caused it.

You wouldn't happen to be using winchester Xperts would you? That's the only ammo that has ever leaded my guns and only in a couple. rc

Update: New Barrel

Well, for what it's worth, I thought I'd post an update on my 617. I called S&W, and they were very nice and sent me a Fed Ex call tag. I sent it in. It showed up back at my place about a week and a half later, with a nice letter saying that it was a tooling issue on their part, and they had replaced the barrel, and they thanked me for letting them serve me. Now that is service, IMO. I took it out the other week, and it's accurate as all heck. Good job, S&W.

Pitted Barrel

I hope you did not/are not using a STAINLESS STEEL BRUSH!

A few years ago I cleaned my Ruger MK-II with a stainless brush and, it
took the riflings out of the barrel.

For lead and carbon buildup, try "Ed's Red homemade" bore cleaner:

Equal Parts of Dex II or better red Automobile Transmission fluid, acetone, mineral spirits, and odorless kerosene (kind you use for home space heaters).

Works like a charm and its CHEAP

[sincerity] Well, that's Chinese manufacturing for you! [/sincerity]
