600 Yards for $600?!

While I have never touched or looked through one,for the low buck longer range scope,a 10 X SWFA Super Sniper actually scored pretty well on a you-tube long range scope evaluation I watched recently. The person running the test gave the turrets/repeatability a realgood score, along with rugged.
It seemed like getting much better cost 3 times as much.

I currently have 2 SWFA scopes and love both dearly for 300 bucks they are amazing and easily keep up with something costing twice as much if not more.

There is a good reason Savage keeps popping up. I just ordered a Savage Hog Hunter in .308. Just got the call from the LGS that it is in, and will pick it up this afternoon, and get her out to the range tomorrow. Two things that appeal to me about this rifle is iron sights and a threaded barrel. Try and find a bolt action .308 with iron sights. It’s not easy to do. I will be putting a scope on it, but for now, it’s iron sights while I research a scope. As someone else already mentioned, it was $428 from Buds. I saw a used one with only 40 rounds thru it and a nice Leopold scope for $500 shipped, but he sold it before I saw it. That was a steal.

I almost bought the hog hunter once but I didn't like that the irons were plastic

I picked the gun up today. There is nothing plastic about the sights at all. When I picked the gun up to look thru the sights, the rear sight was just about to fall out from the dovetail. We took it out and it is an alloy of some sort. Not plastic. Put it back, and tightened the screw that holds it in, so I’ll have to do some sighting in tomorrow.

Savage

Another vote for some type of heavy barrel Savage, and a used Hog is a likely candidate. I bought a used Hog, with rings and the low end Nikon 3-9x, with bases and rings, for $400 about a year ago. Changed the rings and bases, but rifle is a shooter, as is a similar one a pal has.

Getting to 600, and hitting at 600, two different things. You will need some type of sight system that will let you dial up the distance, or minimally some type of hold off aiming points on a reticle, mil-dots or ballistic plex type rig. A typical duplex reticle with standard turrets, will not be practical. You could work up a 600 zero, but your midrange would be excessive. Zero on at midrange, and you might not have a workable aiming point at 600.

Yeah, good shooters can hit at 600 (and those Palma guys go to 1000 or more) with peep as in a service rifle, or I guess the fine notch and blade of a Springfield, but most of us will find that hard to pull off. I'm gonna suggest the Bushnell Elite 10x fixed. They go for about $200, have 90 min of adjustment, and will allow some precision and target ID at that distance.

The Hog Rifle, with medium bull barrel and short tube, and the Accu-Trigger, is a dandy combo.

I would say get an M1 and do it with iron sights; won't be the most accurate, but it'd be gobs of fun. Unfortunately, as of a couple weeks ago, you'd overshoot the price mark.

I agree with another poster to build up your AR with a 20 inch barrel. ARs are incredibly easy to work on and you could just swap the barrel out on your current AR or you could also get a quality BCM upper and shoot iron sights. I think a heavy BCM barrel cost about $300 and the whole upper could be had for around $600. Also, when I was at BPS they had Rem 700 rifle/scope combos for around $600 and I picked up a rem 700 sps vermint for $600 after mail in rebate. The rem 700 sps is a bit over budget but food for thought.

The best I have ever done was one group in the kill zone at 550 yards in 2014.

I have been trying and trying. 600 yards has been my goal for years. So far 600 yards has been too far for me to get them in the kill zone with a cold bore.

I just drive 5 minutes out of town and set up targets. I drive between the target and where I shoot from.

The best cartridge for me at 500 yards is 7mmRemMag.
At 100 yards I can do better than 0.5 moa with 223, 6mmBR, or 257RAI.
