600 yard + hole puncher questions

Currently I have a Rem Model 700 in 308 from the Rem custom shop, and I have been shooting 300 yard matches with friends for a few years. I've sent some down range at 600 just for fun and did pretty good. While I love my 308 (and the cost of reloading for it) I wanted to see what you guys would suggest for a good set-up for 600 yard plus shooting. Caliber, make, and model please. Yes, I do know that the 308 is very capable of shooting good groups at 1000 (with a good shooter behind it), but if I tell my wife that she will not let me buy another gun. Been looking around online and like the Savage 110 BA (comes in 338 or 300WM). For that much money should I go to a 416 or a 50? I've read that the 6.8 shoots very well also. Thanks for the help. Ryan
FYI: I'm looking to spend between 2K to 3K.

338 but it will cost you big time on ammo, its great for 1000 yards shooting, as far as the gun. If you want the best buy a custom. Get something made just for you that fits perfect

To Lonestar45. I've heard of the Cheytac before but never really looked into one. Thanks.
To Pabuckslayer08, yeah been warned about the 338 ammo. I'm sure someone makes dies for it (haven't gotten that far as yet) but I'm sure it burns a "wee bit o'powder". LOL
Can't opt for the custom. I'd LOVE a Mcmillian 416 but I think I would be a single man again if I brought one of those home. Not that a $2,000. gun is a "modest" purchase either.
Thanks for the help. Any caliber better then the other as far as target shooting? Cheaper to load?

i would say a 7mm mag over a 338 it has about 20" less drop at 500 yards the 300win mag is right there wit the 7mm but i like the less kick of the 7mm

as for the gun savage has the 11 long range hunter with adjustable cheekpiece, ajustable muzzlebrake, and a fluted heavy barrel

The Savage 10BA in 338 Lapua is hard to beat for a 338. The ammo prices are the deal breaker in that. Componants are also very expensive for them.

50s are cheap to reload for, well compared to the 338. There are a ton of mil surp componants and ammo for them. Their problem is the gun prices. You could easily get an AR upper and good scope in your price range, and set up to reload for it.

If you like the Savage 10BA, then the 300WM may be the way to go. There isn't a ton of gain in performance over the 308, atleast compared to the 50 and 338.

Personally I'd stick with the 308 for 1000 yards. Stick some 175 SMKs in it and put the money and effort into rounds down range.

It's not the gun or caliber at long range, its the shooter's ability to judge the conditions.

Sure the drop is a lot more, but that's why they put those little knobby things on top of the scope.

If you just want another gun (and "want one" is plenty enough reason for getting one) then I'd stick to the 300 WM, its a know entity at 1000 yards, lots of information on match loading out there.

The other day I was going though my old score books, I have a Model 70 Win in 300 I put together for 1000 yard matches.

I also noticed my best scores at 1000 yards was with my Super Match M1A.

A couple of top F class shooters hereabouts shoot 7mms, one a SAUM, one a WSM. Lots of 6.5x284 rifles in Long Range, it is really a "known quantity" in today's game. The .300 Magnums are out of favor due to recoil.

A 6.8mm is a short range assault rifle round, not what you need to be looking at. One of the less expensive .338 Lap or .338 RUM rifles will have great ballistics and great recoil.

First, with that kind of a budget, you should consider a custom built rifle that very few people have. Think outside of the box, and get something truely unique.

My suggestions are as follows.

Cailber- For long range work, I can not find a better bullet than the 6.5s. they have broken record, after record.
If your looking at a bolt gun, maybe 6.5 Grendel or 6.5x284.

If going gas, 6.5 grendel is the way to go.

As for as a custom rifle, my choice would be gas, everybodys got a bolt gun. Try this:

Ruger Mini Thirty
Custom built Carbon Fiber tactical/long range stock
Carbon Fiber barrel from ABS or Christinsen Arms, chambered in 6.5 Grendel.
I would stay in .750 Diam, with a 22 inch barrel length
Custom trigger
Custom Bedding
Top it of with a custom Dura Coat finish of your choice.

Or

Side Charging, selectable gas 6.5 grendel in an AR15 platform with a carbon fiber barrel.

I can help with your build, as I build custom guns. If you need help, let me know.

This is not one of my guns, just a pic to illustrate the coolness you could have.

but if custum is what u want look at er shaw they make a good looking gun on the savage action i think its going to be my next rifle for target and a little hunting

Dont listern to everyone that says you need a big cal

Dont listern to everyone that says you need a big caliber rifle to shoot 600 yards or even 1000 yards for that matter (I wouldn't get a large cal like a 338lm, 408ct or 50bmg unless I was shooting WELL OVER 1000yards) plus shooting the big cals will cost you alot of cash. If you start shooting big cals like that at 600yards you wont be competitive with the other people shoot smaller calibers. You can just get your 308 rebarreled to a 260remington all you need to do that is a barrel, hell you can even use your 308 brass (as the 308 is the parent case for the 260rem). If you dont want to rebarrel your rifle then any other 308 can be rebarreled or just buy a 260 rifle. The 260rem with good B/C bullets (like the 139gr Lapua Scenar, 140gr Berger VLD or 140 gr SMK) has better trajectory and less wind drift then a 300wm shooting great B/C 30 cal bullets like the 190 SMK. I shoot the odd Long Range comp and use the 260rem for F-Class (1000yards) and benchrest (600yards) and the 260 is very competive have a look at this article it will explain it alot better then I can (without typing you a whole novel).

Good Luck and let me know what you decide on getting?

If this is just for targets, I'd get a quality AR-15 in .223. A longer barrel with a fast twist and you're on your way.

Well if I had 3-5 grand to spend on a rifle I'd love to get a .416 Barrett. And brass(if you reload) would be easy as it's just a necked down .50BMG. But for 600-1000yrds I think a .338 Lupua will do everything and more than what you want.

Edit- well seeing as though I only skimmed through your post the first time missing most of the main points my post has no value.

Although now I would have to agree with whats already been said about the calibers. BUT my advise is to stick with the 308(at least for now, you can always tell your wife that it's not doing what you want and need a new rifle) and use some of the money to start reloading, you may find out a 308 with 175-200+ SMK's or the like will do exactly what you want and save some money in the process.

I would and am doing the same thing kraigwy suggested. But IF i could have any gun + cartridge for 600-1200yds shooting it would be a surgeon action, bedded in a KMW sentinel, chambered in a 6.5Lr. Zak Smith has made hits with this 6.5x47L up to 1600, and .308 to 1300. There are a couple videos of a 7wsm making hits at 1400yds and 2000yds also has a great view of the bullet trace. Sounds impractical but thats just me. 1200 and over i would opt for .338 or bigger. From what i've read you can manage with a .338 RUM it's cheaper than the .338 lapua and has similar ballistics. Here are those awesome videos of long range shooting with the 7wsm.

600+ yard hole punching

In 2006 Dave Lauck was the first to surpass Col. Jeff Cooper's 20-20-20 challenge; 20 shots, in less than 20 seconds, in less than a 20 inch target at 1000 yards. Lauck used a personally customized D&L precision rifle with Black Hills match grade ammunition for the event.

The rifle was built by Dave....it was an AR-15. Granted, he is a pretty good shooter. ;) But, why more than a .223 when it will do the job? :)
