6.5x55 Ruger 77R II v. CZ550 American

Okay so here's the story. I sold my Rem 700 in 7mm-08 to fund a CZ 550 in 6.5 Swede. Verrry hard to get one right now. I have a shot at a Ruger 77 MK II nearly mint for about $650. What the hell, it IS a mauser style action. Should I jump or hold out for the CZ 550?

Which ever one has a 1:8 twist. Last time I checked, new CZ's have a twist rate of 1:9. The 1:8 twist is really needed to optimize 140 grain and up bullets, but that is just my 2 cents.
 
I guess you have to ask yourself why you wanted the CZ 550 n the first place. If you are just looking for that particular caliber, then does it matter what the brand is?
 
Look up the mauser extractor. The Mauser action is nice in that it can be more reliable since the way it controls the case with the extractor. It basically makes for a more reliable bolt action. You can't do things like "short stroke' on a mauser action.
I like my Ruger m77 it's rugged, well built, and way more accurate than I expected.

I'd go with whichever one has the faster twist to stabilize the heavy boat tailed bullets, but that's just me.
 
Pretty tough call. Both are great rifles. Although I really like CZ rifles, I would probably recommend the Ruger.
* The Ruger has a 1:8 twist, an advantage over the CZ 1:9" twist.
* The Ruger comes with rings, CZ rings are expensive.
* The CZ has an adjustable trigger, the Ruger does not but upgrading to a Timney or similar is quick and easy.
* Both the Ruger and the CZ have hammer forged barrels.
* And finally, I just like wood better.

Wooly! the Hawkeye isn't currently cataloged in 6.5x55. Where would I find one?
 
Wow $650 for "nearly mint" does that mean "slightly used"? $639 new??
Am I the only one that thinks that may be a little steep for a Hawkeye?
Not long ago CDNN had them in their catalog for $549 and $599 for the stainless version. Not sure about the calibers they may carry them in though. Of course I guess if you factor in shipping and paying a local FFL it may even out. May be worth your time to shop around though.
I have 3 of them. Love them! Definetly my favorite bolt guns.

I never had problems stabilizing the 140s with 1:9 twist !! The 140 premiums are about the same performance as the 160 standard. Mine was used for 25 years as my deer rifle ! As Finn Aagaard said the 6.5x55 is the perfect deer cartridge.:D
