50ae

Whilst in the desert last weekend I came across a shooting area and found some of the biggest handgun shells I have ever seen laying on the ground. I took some home as souvenirs. They were 50ae, or "50 Action Express" with a rebated rim, nickel plated, and of Speer mfg. They are so big, a 44 Mag shell falls in and rattles around. What are the ballistics? What besides the Desert Eagle is chambered for it?

325 grains @ 1400 fps.

An outfit called Phillips & Rogers made/makes a switch-barrel bolt action rifle with a detachable magazine, called the Wilderness Explorer, in 50 AE, 44 Mag, 218 Bee & 22 Hornet.

AMT has a pistol chambered for the .50AE, but the accuracy is not as good (nor the reliability) as the Desert Eagle. Freedom Arms also has the .50AE in a revolver. I believe the Grizzily Pistol (a 1911 variant) also chambers the .50AE.

However, the .50AE is a very potent round. I have shot it through my DE and it is very hefty in the facotry Samson loading, 325-grain at about 1350 to 1400 fps. :D :D :D

I think that TheQuickAd hit all the .50AE platforms. What I'd like to add is my experience shooting what I consider the be the quintisential .50AE, the Desert Eagle:

It's big; it's just cool to look at. You never knew how many friends you had at the range until you bring one of these bad boys in.

It kicks; not unbearably because it is so big and heavy, but about on par with a mid-sized frame .357. I'd say that my .44 Magnum 6 inch barrel Anaconda kicks more.

The blast!!! Wow, what a blast! The muzzle blast on this thing is tremendous! It's huge!

I want one. Preferably in the brushed stainless. It's just bad @ss! I almost bought one, but went for the Carbon-15 pistol instead.

Did I mention the muzzle blast???

I saw some gun called "The Grizzly" its some 1911 with a bunch of stuff on it, like compansators and stuff thats chambered for the .50 AE. I have heard this caliber kicks and like a mule though, so I guess you have to be "experienced" to use them.

It may be big, but the desert eagle still ranks right up there with the ugliest guns on earth !

Some people love em, I hate em.

Why dont you get rid of that nickel plated sissy pistol and get yourself a glock. :::Tommy Lee Jones. U.S. Marshals:::

I was at the range when a yuppie brought out his new .50 AE Desert Eagle. It was like tank fire. Kee-rist! What commotion. Darn near silly. His flinch got so bad that he was digging up dirt about 20 feet out at a 15 yard range. Not even hitting paper. He asked me if I wanted to shoot it as I was putting teensy little .45 cal holes in the center of my target. I declined. Gawd, it was awful.
I asked him why he bought it. He said they had just bought a cabin and he bought it for bears. Bears!!!
I suppose shooting it in one county would make all the bears go to another county. I considered asking if he had thought of a shotgun or a rifle but after looking at him a while, I knew it wouldn't have done any good.

Hamilton Bowen (fellow East Tennessean) converts Super Redhawks to .50AE (and .500 Linebaugh) for use as close-in anti-bear weapons.

I have this burning urge to get one. However, the fact that I enjoy having sensation in my hands deters me.

LAR Grizzly makes a 50AE (very $$$), I had an AMT Automag V 50AE (3000 made)- biggest POS I every owned, I think Freedom Arms makes a 50AE revolver ($$$).

I had a DE 50AE and sold it, and just recently bought another. The gun is awesome, made very well- can't hit anything with it, but its fun, makes a great stress reliever (louder than loud). Anyone that sees it either loves it or is confused as to why anyone would want to own one. Magnum Research's Customer service is really good also, been a great help.

It gets lots of attention in black, its a good thing I didn't get it in Titanium Gold :)

I can't imagine the reason for converting an AR to .50AE. You don't gain any shootability, and the range and accuracy drop off significantly. Of course, you gain the fact that your ammo now costs about 4-5 times as much as .223... :)

I thought the LAR Grizzly was a .50 rifle round (i forget the exact name for it), not the .50 Action Express pistol round. The .50 rifle round is like 4 inches long, while the .50AE is about an inch and a half.

To the best of my knowledge (according to the company webpage) LAR is no longer manufacturing the Grizzly pistol... bummer.

One more for the "why the he** do you have on of those!!!" catagory.

Was at gun range yesterday (indoor) and ANOTHER yupster was attempting to shoot it. First of all it KILLS your hearing when somebody in the other booth is throwing .50 bowling balls down range. Its downright annoying. When the yupster DID hit the paper it was usually around the outside of the figure, but it did make a nice big hole.

BANG!..2.50 BANG!..5.00 BANG! BANG!...range fee. Go figure.

I believe that is .50BMG (Browning Machine Gun). I want one so bad but I want the semi-auto version can't remember the name or model. I think the Grizzly is a single shot.

Triggerhappy, you want the Barrett 82-A1 semi auto 50BMG- gun is absolutely intense, I want one also.

$6,700 + $1375 for the Swarovski Ret. Scope

.454 Casull makes a bigger 'Bang'. However, revelation comes when one
hands you a loaded Thompson Contender Pistol, without telling you the
caliber.

I should have asked back then before I fired it - 30-06 really kicks.

But with a scope, I hit the paper. The owner shoots the gun at a
hunting range and usually scores on 300m.
