500 S&W vs 50AE??

Cypherninja is right about the grips. If you decide to go with the 500, you really need to try the grips on the Taurus and the Smith before you buy. If you decide on the DE fiddy, the grip is much larger than most to accomodate the magazine and can be a real handfull if you have small paws. I have the DE in .44 mag and love it, and changing to the 50AE is only a matter of less than 30 seconds, to change barrel and magazine (the .50 and .44 utilize the same bolt, unlike the .357) I also have an X-frame Smith, but I opted for the 460 mag instead of the 500, simply because it also fires the 454 C and 45LC. Or maybe I just needed an excuse to buy three sets of reloading dies instead of just one?!?!:D :D

You're comparing apples to oranges.

The Desert Eagle is a very limited pistol, and not very powerful compared to the .500 S&W.

A far better choice than either is the S&W .460. You can use 460 ammo, .454 Casull ammo, or .45 colt ammo. And the .460 is FAR more powerful than the .50AE.

Well, if DA isn't all that important, BFR's are a far better gun, more accurate then the Taurus, and more packable. You can check Magnum Research's website, but, they offer long cylinder .500 S&W, and, a bunch of rifle calibers, with more energy, in .458.
They also offer .475 Linebaugh in the short cylindered version, and, their guns are tack drivers, and super strong.

Their grips are excellent, and, since they are the same frame as Ruger's, they have a ton of options the other guns don't. Plus, they are made from VERY strong stainless. Sort of the poor man's Freedom Arms.

I enjoy both of them

personal opinion

I have or had Desert Eagles in .357 and .44. A literal blast to shoot, but not a whole lot of good for anything else. I have not yet tried the .50, but I don't see that as needful to my opinion. Unless you are going to scope it, or spend the extra on adjustable sights, the DE is very limited as to it's ammo. NO Cast bullets! Full house ammo, or it won't cycle. And the "fixed" sights are only going to be "on" for one bullet weight and velocity at one distance.

The S&W has greater untility, on every count. Greater max power, Ammo versatility, adjustable sights (standard), and a grip that most people can manage.

I don't know about the Taurus from personal experience. People say they are good, but if you are not going to nickel and dime the idea, why not spend your money on an American product?

I have a Raging Bull (.44mag)- great gun, and shot a DE in .50AE and .44mag

DE is fun gun to shoot but I'd go with one in .44mag; very little difference in power/recoil (with hot .44 loads) but HUGE difference in ammo cost!

I would never buy a .500 just too impractical IMO. Ammo must cost a fortune and recoil is not very pleasant. I'd rather get a .460 (also shoots .454 and .45colt)

but personally a hot .44mag is enough for me :)

With $2000 to spend, go first class and get a Freedom Arms M83 convertible in .50AE/.500 Wyoming Express. I've got a .50AE Desert Eagle, two S&W .500's, a BFR .45-70, and the aforementioned FA convertible. I used to think the BFR was about as good as a revolver could get until I got my Freedom Arms convertible, WOW!

He is referring to a single-action revolver manufactured by Freedom Arms that can be used to fire both the .50AE and .500 Wyoming cartridges, using interchangeable cylinders.

Well, this is just my oppinion and not experience really. I would get the .50AE Desert Eagle. It is my dream handgun to own. On a coolness scale of 1-10, it rates about a 14 with me. :D Up until the .50GI cartridge, I think the only .50 caliber cartridge that could be fired from a semi auto handgun was the .50AE.

Now as far as ammo availibility goes, to me it seems that the .500 S&W mag seems more available and cheaper than the .50AE. Seems like there's always sale prices on remanufactured .500 mag ammo, but never on .50AE. I may be right or may be wrong. Knowing me, probly the latter. :p

Anyways I say go with the Desert Eagle. My dad owns the .357 mag version and I love that thing and can't wait until i'm 21 and buy my .50AE version.

The .500 mag and the .50AE are both well worth getting into reloading for. A decent single stage reloading setup, complete with all the other necessary accessories such as scale, dies, manual, case lube pad, primer flipper, etc., will easily pay for itself in 150-250 rounds, depending on what you buy.

The fifties, L to R: .50GI (Guncrafter Industries), .50AE, the mighty .44 "most powerful handgun in the world" magnum for size comparison, .500 Wyoming Express, and the S&W .500 magnum.

I have been wanting a Desert Eagle for years. in that time i have bought many other guns. from shotguns and rifles, to many diffrent handguns. this last year i got to fire my friends D Eagle .50ae for the first time. it was then i knew i had to have one. i have thought about going cheaper and getting a .357 or .44. but if i am going to spend that kind of money. i want the big one. i dont care how practical it is. **** i live in WI where i cant carry my guns anyways. i want this gun because it is cool, and it will look bad ass at the range. as soon as i get my tax money back in a week or two. i am getting my gun :)

as far as what you should do. buy whatever gun you like best.

I have a Raging Bull in .41 mag and other various S&W revolvers. From my experience go with the S&W 500, fit, finish, and the feel of the trigger are excelent campared to the Raging Bull. Every Taurus I have ever shot feels like their are metal filings throughout the entire gun (Revolver or Semi).

Let me drop a shot in here.

What about the 45-70 revolver?

Does that rifle cartridge make as much power as these super handgun rounds if it is shot out of a single action revolver?

The .500 S&W mag can surpass even the hot .45-70 loads in everything I've seen in recent ballistics. Though, Lord knows why anybody would want to shoot one.

I traded for the four inch S&W 500 Magnum a few months back. I went to the range for the first time with the gun and with a little trepidation, proceeded to run the gun through it's paces. I actually ended up being able to shoot it one handed with both my left or right hand. The second time I went, I took my girlfriend who is 5 feet tall and 110 lbs. She proceeded to empty the cylinder into the red and make me look like a fool.

triple the energy of the .50 AE (1200-1400 ft/lbs).

You can find .44 Magnum loaded to levels above .50 AE easily.

I'm not sure where this ammo is, the only round in 44 that surpasses 50AE that I know of is the Buffalo Bore 340 gr. L.F.N. G.C. and that's a +P+ round. 50AE typically has the same energy at 100yds that a typical .44 has at the muzzle.

The two Speer offerings in standard loadings are 1517 and 1600 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle. 44 is not in the same class. IMHO.

Wow, I just noticed how old this thread is. Pretty sure the guy made up his mind by now. :D
