.50 Caliber Barret Sniper Rifle!

Shot a Barrett today. Don't know the model, but it was a single shot bolt gun.
1st time ever, shot it just once. Kick isn't bad, but the blast is major concussive.
PSD ammo, dead center at 197 yards.:) Made myself proud.
Went back to my .308 and scattered my next 5 shot group all over the paper like buckshot.:D

Barrett 98 bravo

This is a rifle that will kill a lot of birds with one stone. It is a Barrett as the poster wanted. Shoots an awesome cartridge (338 lapua), and lastly you can shoot it a mile accurately. Still get ten rounds and they run in the mid 4000.00 range. Half that of the fifty cal.

I have shot one at the Knob creek gun show and think the Barret is the top long range gun built.
But I would never own one for the simple reason that there are no ranges within 100 miles that will allow a 50 BMG and I don’t have my own range.

I would love a .50 cal just to have one...
But there is no place to shoot it, and at $5 round, so why?

The .50 BMG is really more of an anti-materiel round- not anti-personnel.

Though it'll get the job done, there are other rounds such as the .338 LM that are preferred as anti-personnel beyond the range of the .308. The .338 LM can also be used as anti-materiel, but lacks the kinetic energy of the .50.

If you want to go beyond .308 range, and can afford the ammo the .338 LM would be my choice. For a less expensive stick- and ammo- the 300 Win Mag is a popular choice.

They do allow them at the 200M range we frequent. You can always tell from the parking lot if there's one hot in there...every other rifle goes "Bang", and the .50...well, you feel it in your gut from 100 yards away. Never had the chance to shoot one, yet...

I seriously doubt one of them will meet your needs as a shooter. For game and personal defense, there are many better choices. The .50BMG is an equipment destruction weapon. There aren't many uses for it.

The OP's title of the thread is the use, and this caliber has held the record for longest range sniper kills:

The record is currently held by a 338 Lapua Mag, which I would rather own.

Barrett 82

At a course at Whittington a few years back, my group was 22" at 1000 yards and that was the second best group in the match. I think the best one was 14" with a custom rifle. If you have shot there you know how the wind blows.

I am sure now that I can shoot it much tighter, but at the time that was as good as I could do.

Barrett is a good rifle to get into that particular caliber, it is built tough to handle most ammo. Barrett factory ammo is about 660 grain of bullet, where as to go a mile I suggest something a little heavier going as fast or faster than 2800 FPS.

Now the 99 is also a barrett that also deserves your attention.

Depending on how your barrett is set up and what options you have on the rifle itself you might need a 5 by 22 nightforce to get enough elevation for a 2000 yard shot. Since that scope has 100 MOA in elevation adjustment you just might be well served in that choice.

Of course your experience may vary.

Ive been dreaming about a Barrett .50 bolt action for years! I would love to own one as its a beautiful rifle and can sure reach out and touch someone. If i had $5000 to spend on, id buy one in a heart beat

Most 99's have Krieger barrels IIRC and were purpose built for accuracy. Mine shoots sub MOA at 500 yards with plain old PMC ball. Even better with Hornady AMAX. Hopefully I'll get to try it at 1K in the near future using lathe turned VLD brass solids.
