.50 BMG Recoil

Im with laytonj1 i dont want em taking anything away. And that 40mm is only good for between 18 and 400 meters and at such low velocity it better not be a moving target.

Wasn't the longest sniper kill done by that Canadian in Afganistan using the big 50?

Sounds like a perfectly capable anti-personnel rifle to me.

EDIT: Yeah I remember now. I watched an interview with him and he said he had to adjust for United States ammo cause it was loaded hotter and he was out of Canadian ammo.

DLiller tell me about it. The first time i fired one i couldnt believe you could actually watch the round the whole way to the target. I cant remember what the muzzle velocity is but a tennis ball launcher would give it a run for its money.

The .50bmg I shot was a custom bolt action that weighed in at over 20pd.

Recoil wasn't that bad.

You can find used rifles under 2000. So they aren't out of reach for a person that really wants one.

505 gibbs.

Ultimate prairie dog round.

Set one at the head of a burrow. Detonate that thing with a .223. You will kill every dog in a 50 yard radius.

Okay, so I exaggerate a little.

If you want massive recoil find an old 8gauge with a brass buttplate. My grandpa had one and i fired it one time when i was 16. It brought tears to my eyes.

I don't think that saying that there is no practical use for them means he's antigun.

If you think that firing a .50 bmg at targets makes it "useful," more power to you. you can't legally hunt with one in most places, you will never legally be able to use it against vehicles, etc...

I agree that they are for all practical purposes useless, just like a 32 gauge damascus barrel SXS left handed shotgun is. They are a still a hoot to shoot, useless or not.

Don't call me an anti gunner. You would be wrong.

It's awesome to see how much anti 50cal there is after fads like the 338 have stepped in. Not saying it's a new round,or that it hasn't proven to be one of the most effective rounds, just that before it's recent hype, From everything I've read, 50bmg's weren't considered sub par. Now the 50bmg that has a longer effective range and better anti material ballistics is somehow considered "useless"

Every round has advantages and disadvantages and the 50bmg is no different. It does things better that other cartridges cannot. The main gripe about it is how relatively expensive it is, but that's really not an issue. When your looking at long range shooting like that, it all becomes expensive, the 338 really isn't a bargain either... Ultra long range shooting isn't for the cash strapped. Then if we are talking about actual self defense/military life and death applications there isn't a price tag high enough that I wouldn't pay as long as I had the $$

i hope you are joking about this, so before i call you an anti-gun person would you please elaborate ?

I already explained in that post. It's too big for anti-personel from a rifle, and it's too weak/not enough firepower for anti-armor/vehicle/barrier. I'm looking at the weapon from a practical standpoint, not simply for having fun at the range.

It's now the 2nd longest.

My experience with 50 Cal is with Turret mounted M2 - I did not feel the recoil at all, but it sure rocked the Humvee. :D

The M2 is not anti-personnel, its anti-anything I want to shoot. :D

The recoil is low brass12GA however back blast is commanding. Here is one of mine in action.

Yeesh. I'm glad that I'm not one of the folks that restrict my firearms to an absolutely dedicated utilitarian use. My safes would be nearly empty, and life would be boring.
