I am shure this had been asked many times, but i would like your guys info on this two calibers. I am looking for stoping power and for accuracy.
Thanks House

I shoot my 30 more accurately than my 23. Which equals more confidence as a CCW gun for me.

.45 guys will tell you one thing, .40 guys will tell you another.

Tim actually summed it up pretty good :)

When will caliber wars stop???

Both .45 and .40 suck. You need a .50 AE or a 440 Corbon.... Or how about 45-70???

Yes,this debate does rage on..latest empirical data does seem to favor a large bullet moving at moderate velocity which would once again over the last 90 years or so give the nod to the venerable .45ACP.

I dont own a .40 but I have played one on T.V....... smile

Seriously, I have several .45 both 1911s, Sigs, Rugers and Glocks, they are all good for combat accuracy.

My investigator carries an HK USP .40 and he loves it. With his LEO he gets big clips. I tease him that my 1911 only needs one shot, the rest are simply to single the location of the body... smile.

I have shot .40 and to tell you the truth, as for as I am concerning, the .40 is like the 9mm, if you have hi-caps(pre-bans of course) then go with the 9mm or .40, you dont, what is the real world difference of 8 rounds vs. 10 rounds... for all you math nuts it is two rounds... smile. I personally dont get the math so I carry a .45 ACP.

Well those are my thoughts.

Happy shooting

Everything is always being compared to the 45. Two decades ago when our military switched over to the 9mm in order to use the same ammo as our allies over seas, the debate raged on over here which was better: the .45 or the 9mm. Now that the 9mm has been found lacking (no law enfocement agency that I am aware of is currently switching to the 9mm and a growing number are actually switching from the 9mm to something else -- usually either a .357Sig or a .40S&W), the .45 is being compared to something else -- the 40.

The point is, the best (the .45) is always being compared to something that might be better.

I own both a 40 and a 45. I feel that either one can get the job done but if I had to pick one and if they both had the same number of rounds, I would pick the 45.

The caliber debate (9mm, 40S&W, .45 Auto, etc.) is just plain silly IMO. One cannot be "better" than another...only different. The 9mm is an extremely efficient round. The .45 is a more effective stopper than a 9mm. The .40 is in the middle....a bit more toward the .45 side perhaps.

My advice for what it's worth...just get a .45 ACP. You'll be glad you did!

SM

I own both .40's and .45's and I would say the gap between the .40 and .45 is much narrower than the gap between the 9mm and .40. The street statistics for the .40 are almost identical to the .45 for most factory hollowpoints. The 9mm is much different on the other hand. There are very few 9mm loads available to the public that will match the average stopping power of the .40 or .45. The .40 is a higher energy round than the .45 in general, with a stopping power nearly equivalent to the .45. It is much cheaper to shoot as well. Having said that, I would have slightly greater confidence in a .45 than a .40 but not much. With the full capacity magazine ban, I am becoming more inclined towards .45's simply because most .45 models don't have crippled magazines.

Hello every one. You all have good points. I am a 45 man my self and you all have over looked one thing, stopping power. That was the question right. Any old timer will tell you that the most stopping power lies with the 44 magnums. It is proven that the 44 will out penetrate the 40’s and the 45’s.
Hey I have to go for now because of a storm will have more input latter.

Ammo for both calibers can be found at or near 500 pounds muzzle energy. True, the heavier .45 slug is going to hold it's energy farther downrange. Unless you're shooting a BG 150 yards away, energy is not going to change much between calibers en route. Ever fire a tracer out of a pistol? At 25 yards, it's amazing how LONG it takes to get there! I opt for a speedy delivery, hence my handle >>> fastforty :)

I think that it depends on the barrel length. If you look at the barrel lengths on the charts, the .45 is designed out of a 5 inch barrel and the .40 out of a 4 inch barrel.

The tests I have seen of the .45 out of a 4 inch barrel are pretty pathetic on expansion.

If you are going with a compact gun, go with the .40 because it is designed to shoot out of a 4 inch barrel, and it performs GREAT out of a 4 inch barrel, with expansion and everything.

Out of the longer barrel, the .45 may pull ahead in overall performance.

Accuracy? Are you talking TARGET shooting or self-defense shooting. Few guns would fail a self-defense shooting accuracy standard. Keep in mind 85% or MORE will be 21 feet or less and most at almost arms or room length. Don't confuse the two.
As for power, when you are in trouble you will never wish for a SMALLER gun.

Why settle on the .40 when you know that there is something bigger and better out there?

.45 shooter for life

Judge Blackhawk - I don't get the math on this 8 rounds v. 10 rounds either. I mean 8 rounds is 20% less than 10 rounds, but 10 rounds is 25% more than eight rounds. I tried to do the math on 13-, 15- and 17-rounds but gave up and ordered the New York Reload holster(two guns - no reload). John
