45 under your pillow

In olden days cowboys slept with their Colt 45 under their heads at night.

While our Colt 45s might have a suffix of ACP after the 45, no reason we shouldn’t do the same.

The only question is whether our 1911 should be in Condition One, Two, or Three when kept under our pillow.

In olden days cowboys slept with their Colt 45 under their heads at night.

Who told you that?

My bet is that their Colts stayed in the holster and they unbuckled their holster and kept it within easy reach nearby.

I carry in a paddle holster, when mine comes off, it goes directly under the pillow, cocked and locked in a thumbsnap holster. every night for 28 some years.

I think in reality very few cowboys carried pistols, fewer yet could hit anything with it.

There was a time I slept with a Colt, but it wasnt a revolver, it was a M16a1.

A few months ago there was some guy on here feeling out the market for a design he had dreamed up-for a pillow holster. A pillow with a hole in it to hide a gun in. I also think that sleeping with it under the pillow would be uncomfortable and possibly not as easily accessable as you might want, a bedstand in the open might be alot easier! Or even one of those bedframe holsters. I can imagine a gun kept under the pillow collecting alot of lint, dust, dustmites, hair, etc. and having to be cleaned out weekly? Bedbugs crawling in the barrel too. How many cowboys had pillows? Bet they used a saddle or rolled up blanket or something.

If your in home defense situation is so bad that you have to sleep with a gun under your pillow then you need to rethink what you are doing to slow the guy down before he gets to you.

You should be setting there fully awake and ready for business before he gets anywhere near you. You should not be reaching for a pistol.

I'd prefer to keep the muzzle of a .45 as far from my head as possible.

I keep my G17 on a nightstand with (1) my G17 (2) a flashlight (3) my cell phone---and that is all. No clutter or unnecessary junk. (Muzzle pointed away from me)

Putting a gun under your head is never a great idea, IMHO.

My .45 is in the nightstand right beside my bed.

I don't want a gun under my pillow. More confusing to find in the night, anyway, if you need it. A nightstand is a much better idea, imo. What if you roll over or something, and knock it behind the bed? Or what if your lady friend gouges herself with it? Bad idea...

Do those who sleep with them under the pillow sleep in some form of rigor? How do you get comfortable? How do you plump up the pillow. When you roll over and reposition the pillow, do you have to move the gun too?

Would never work for me even if I did think it a good idea, not the way I sleep :D

One essential requirement of a defensive weapon is that it be where you expect to find it when you need it. Objects that start the night under the pillow rarely stay there, just ask any parent who has played tooth fairy or kid who has hunted for the coin.

If you look at the movies

(Iknow, I know), you will find that when the cowboys werre in town, sleeping in beds (often with the saloon girls), they usually hung their gunbelt on the bedpost at the head of the bed.

They didn't use the nightstand, because that's usually where the pitcher and wasbasin were.

I usually...

when camping / backpacking, have the sidearm in a IWB with thumbsnap.
Its either in a soft-side clothbag next to me or inside the bag with my right hand on it. My left-hand has a minimag with the lanyard around the wrist.

The only question is whether our 1911 should be in Condition One, Two, or Three when kept under our pillow.

If in condition 1, I would be afraid I would wake up with condition dead due to a condition big, hole in my head:D

I still deal with night mares from Nam....I don't keep a gun anywhere I can get to till wide awake.

Yes, but

Chuck Norris sleeps with a night light....

Not because he is afraid of the dark...

the dark is afraid of him:D
