.45 {long} Colt or .44 Magnum

If your life was threatened by a large four legged animal (bear, alligator, etc. -- your pick) and you only have factory ammo (no personal or privately hand-loaded stuff), which would you grab? A .45 {long} Colt or a .44 Magnum?

You can't take both because somebody else is going to take the one that you don't want. You get first pick. Which one will it be?

That's a no-brainer if you only allow factory ammo - .44 Mag. And especially if you include "factories" like Garrett ammo.

Do I count?

45 Colt all the way (335g WFN at 1150-1250fps...)

"All my ammo is factory ammo"

If it's strictly factory then the 44 wins by foot loads. Now if you're talking max loads, a lot of 45 shooters would beg to differ. I admit I'm still lost on the controversy.

WESHOOT2 - yes, you do count. In fact as I was replying, I was thinking, "I'll bet WS2 has some real hot .45 Colt loads." But I wasn't sure. So in that case FUD, either gun will do what you want with "factory" loads.

.45 Colt as it can be loaded to perform better than the .44 magnum without all the fuss, noise and hurt.

It's funny that this subject comes up at this time. I'm in the process of buying a custom gun by Gary Reeder. It's called the Alaskan Survivalist. The gun I like is based on a Ruger SS Redhawk. The dilema is I can have it in .45 LC or .44 Magnum and I can't decide which to pick. You can see the pistol at www.reedercustomguns.com.(It's the last one on the page.) (I like the bright stainless) It's really a tough decision. I know your dilema Fud.

sks - For the purposes of this discussion, you aren't allowed to load anything. You have to buy your ammo from an established manufacturer.

When I said "I'll take the other one" I was meanin whichever one somebody wanted I would be just as happy with the other. There is new manufacture ammo that is outright nasty for both of em.

Sam...darn, even with ballon head cases can't get enough outta my .44spec to play with you guys.

Greetings all, I'll side with the late great Elmer Keith on all discussions of the .45 Colt vs. the .44 Remington Magnum. Mr. Keith did'nt look back after he was presented his Pre-29 .44 mag. I've owned all manner of .45 Colts including the overpriced and antiquated Freedom Arms but none were the equal of the old 29s in accuracy. I've sampled most of the .45 Colt loads on the net now and the problem lies in that no currently mass produced gun in .45 Colt is designed to operate at the speeds the .45 colt is capable of. henry

Is the Ruger Vaquero not mass produced? It is one of the strongest guns out there. From what I understand it is what Linebaugh uses to make his hand cannons.

Factory loads only 44 mag. If you reload 45 Colt all the way and use the Rugers they are designed much stronger than factory Colts. Not many people can afford a Freedom Arms.

Not even the Dan Wesson Large Frame .45?

After this (last this morning) post, I'm going to S, S, not-S, and go outside and shoot my 45 Redhawk. I'll be shooting some of my 335g WLN's; they go fast.

44 mag - HAH!

"all my recoil is factory recoil"

Okay Mal, I'll still go with the .45 Colt. Many ammo manufacturers are coming out with better and better .45 Colt loads.

While it has been considered by many to be an out dated or old fashioned round, it has, through the course of time, taken it's fair share of animals and BGs.

That being said, it is so much nicer to shoot than the .44 Mag unless you just enjoy pain. :)

The .45 Colt is one of my favorite rounds and will dispatch most critters.
