45 Colt load Unique

It would be wasting good, and very expensive brass. You might get more reloads out of it, but not enough to cover the additional expense. You always have the option of loading down 454 as opposed to cutting down the brass.
 
When I was doing Cowboy Action shooting about 16 years ago, I was using 7.4 to 7.8grs of Unique with 200gr Lasercast bullets. Made for a comfortable shooting cowboy load.
 
What would be the decision process to determine whether the SBC 300 grain bullet should be seated at the 1st or 2nd crimp groove?
 
I'd use the longer configuration in this case just because you'll be loading it in the longer 454 cylinders.

Normally I would use the shorter configuration only if the longer one had the potential of binding the cyclinder rotation due to inadequate clearance.
