45 Colt? Bad-ass round?

I love the .45 Colt. In my Uberti, I shoot 250gr LFRN bullets at approximately 800 fps.
Perfect for coyotes, other small game and plinking.

In MY Ruger Bisley only! I shoot 325gr LFN bullets at approximately 1200 fps.
I use this on deer, and other big game. I worked up to this load and it shows no signs of excessive pressure, and it's quite accurate.

250gr. at 800fps = 355 ft.lbs. of energy at the muzzle.
325gr. at 1200fps = 1039 ft.lbs. of energy at the muzzle.

I don't think either has too bad of recoil but you can definately tell the difference! With the Bisley grip, the recoil is softer for me, then with a standard Blackhawk grip.

Depends on the gun the load that you can use. SAA's and clones you have to use lighter loads. Rugers, Thompson-Contender, Freedom Arms, Magnum Research, and misc. custom smiths can take it higher.

The Ruger can handle a stout load, but with a custom 5-shot cylinder from one of the smiths, you can add a couple hundred more fps.

I prefer the .45 Colt over the .44 Mag, but that is just me. My next big bore is either a .454 Ruger Alaskan or a Freedom Arms 83 in .475 Linebaugh. I love big bore revolvers.

..THANK GOD(literally) for 'OLD SCHOOL' in all things..otherwise we would be stuck with the school of puke....ahhh...S-I-N-G-L-E A-C-T-I-O-N...DA is good too though...

Colt Gov't 45..KING of all automatics...

There are a lot of folks on various Boot Hills throughout the West whose last thought was that the .45 Colt certainly was a "bad-ass" round for them.

I never thought of the 45 Colt as being a "bad ass round". I really can't pin point the reason I like the 45 so much. But I will take a 45 over a 44 any day. My Bisley and Super Blackhawk in 44 pretty much stay in the safe. My Vaquero and Blackhawk in 45 get used more often. As well as my 1894 Marlin and two 94s in 45 Colt.

Let me try to pin point the reasons!

1) With a 45 load that is stronger than the old 45 load and less than the 44 I can shoot game without hearing protection. Two three shots I'm ok with the 45. I will not shoot a 44 without hearing protection!

2) I love the way the 45 recoils. It's a nice push. with that push I get a good feel for the gun. After dropping the hammer on a 45 I can almost tell you where the bullet hit just buy the way the gun recoiled and the sight picture I had. I have been shooting the 45 for about 20 years.

3) I reload! So having 1000 rds of ammo does not break the bank. I reloaded 200 rds for the 44s and still have 100 rds left. One day I will shootem up:D .

4) I find that I can out shoot most people who shoot 44s. Not because the 45 is more accurate. But because the 45 is a easy gun to shoot. Most of the time flinch does in the 44 boys. A 5 lb coffee can at 100 yards. I could hit two to three times in six shots offhand. I never shot with a 44 guy that could do that. But I'm sure there are 44 shooters that can. At age 40 my eyes started to go bad. I'm 44 now. But I will try to give them 5 lb coffee cans hell at 100 yards if anybody wants to try:)

5) I like Elmer Keith and what he did with the 44. But I like the 45 and the history behind the cartridge. With the older 45 it can loaded to low pressure spec or even Black Powder if you like. Or crank it up to what a 44 will do. The 45 turns out to be a reloaders dream cartridge.

45 Colt? Bad-ass round?

Next trip to your local gun store, have 'em crack open a box of 200 gr .45LC Blazers.
Check out the cavity those suckers have.
They come by the nickname "flying ashtry" for a good reason.
(They look almost big and deep enough to swallow a 115 gr 9mm bullet.)

45 colt...badass???

define badass...

accuracy wise, this was Beartooth bullets 265gr keith bullets at about 850fps out of a Smith mountain gun.

If'n I was being shot at, it would qualify as badass.....

launch a 300 grain lead bullet at 1300fps from a BH or Vaqueero......

Better duck and stay down.

big bullets with large melplats make big holes and big wound channels
