45 ACP primers large and small . . .

So I tried the small magnum primers in the 45 . . .

So I loaded up the small primer hole 45 cases with the small magnum primers. They seated a touch below flush as they should. I can't remember which powder I used but I loaded up some 230 FMJ with the minimum powder load recommended in my Lee manual. They shot just fine. Now that I'm thinking about it I think the powder was bullseye. Anyway, that could be a way to use up my small mag primers. Course I could still buy myself a 357 mag. Hmmmm . . . Anyway I only shoot the 45 for the fun of shooting it, so other than staying safe there are no critical accuracy or competition issues involve. Thanks to all the forum members for all the help and encouragement along the way. I come to the shooting sports as one "untimely born" and am having a good time learning all I can about this world.

From the chrono results I've seen (Shooting Times, others), fast powders like N310, Clays & Bullseye shoot the same or a bit faster with SPPs, slow powders like HS-6 can loose up to 100 fps with standard SPPs.

For target loads with Bullseye & N310 I use the softest small primer I can find like the Federal Gold Medal or #100.

If I were loading small primer brass with a slow powder I would use a magnum primer.

Those small primer .45acp are a bad idea. Just two days ago I picked up two at the range while gathering my empties. Seems I always manage to get a few of someone else's empties. Luckily I caught it before priming. I throw the small primed cases in a box, and when I get 50 of them, I load them up and shoot them, but then leave the brass on the range floor.
