45-70 Govt Powder

Hello,

Just wondering what the popular powders are for reloading the 45-70 Govt ?
Usually it seems a couple of powders tend to be adopted as the go - to powders, for whatever reasons.

Powders for 300 grain bullets and 405 grain bullets ?

Several powders will work. I use IMR-4198 when I'm not loading holy black.

Really depends on bullet weight and how big a bruise you want to leave on your shoulder.

One you wouldn't normally think of but I got excellent results with on lighter (300 gr) bullets is Ramshot xterminator.

I've used about a dozen powders pushing 400'ish grain bullets to around 1800fps with a 18.5" barrel. My all time fave is H4198, which unfortunately is unobtainable (seemingly).
Accurate LT-30 is very similar and available (but expensive).
Stay with fast burning powders - don't bother with 4895/varget speed range.

Some powders are the right speed range but are not temp stable (3031,Re7,5744) - boom in the cold morning and BOOM in the warm afternoon.

A consistently good one for many 45-70 loads that I have used too.
