.44 Special Ammo

I'm pleased to know that about the Silvertips. They work well for me in several calibers. I was thinking they weren't made anymore, but I did see a box today on a store shelf (forgot the caliber). The .380 ones feed well in my old AMT Backup after I did a throat job on it many years ago.

As an aside re: the 44 spls, I once lived on a farm in the midwest and more than once used my .44 mag Ruger Super Blackhawk as an impromptu drill when I needed a quick hole in some sheetmetal.

99% of my 44 Special rounds are handloaded, as a I save a ton of money, and I can tailor the ammo to suit my needs.

The only commercial ammo I buy is for self-defense, and for that I use Buffalo Bore's 180gr JHP, which sizzles along at 1150 fps. It is OK to shoot in all 44 Specials except for the Charter Arms Bulldog.

Just to add that for practice ammo, I do reload. With all of the different calibers my wife and I shoot in a week, it is about 200 rounds of either 380, 9mm,9mmMak,45acp or 44 special. Reloading allows us to shoot and practice a lot more than if we didn't.

Ozzieman: From the Midway site re: the 44 spl silvertip HP ammo:

"Status:Out of Stock, No Backorder
Date expected in stock: 9/14/2011"

Blazer uses the Speer Gold Dot.
Hornady makes a 165 gr Critical Defense round.
Speer has a 210 gr Gold Dot in downloaded Mag, which is a little stouter than a 45 ACP +P...roughly 500 ft/lbs.
