44. Magnum

He wanted me to ask what the best gun he can get for around $500. Also he wants to know how the recoil is on the lighter rounds.

Are we still talking .44 Magnums? If so, I think that the Ruger Super Redhawk would be your best deal for around 500 bones. On lighter .44 Special rounds, the recoil is substantially less than magnum rounds. Less even than the .357 rounds he has likely been shooting.

If he's considering other calibers, have him look at a .45ACP semi-automatic. Visit Ruger's website and check out the P97. Low recoil compared to the .44 Magnum, and factory ammo is a LOT cheaper. I think I paid $330 for mine, so they are a lot less pricey than the .44

Larryf1952 Hmmm...if he's complaining that the .357 "hurts his hands", you will definitely not ease the problem by letting him handle a .44.
I didn't notice he was having trouble with the .357 hurting his hands until I re-read this thread.

I handle a .44 Mag. almost every week depending on the weather. The checkered wood grips on both of my .44's bites the skin in my palm to the point I sometimes wimp out and put on a shootin glove.

I dislike rubber, and I'm thinking about replacing the checkered Eagles on my M629jm with smooth Eagles. So when you take him to the range consider the grips as well as the recoil. Good Luck...

If you don't spread this out a little

he's going to be wanting a .50 before he's 14. I got my 14 year old a GP-100 in .357 mag and he is awesome with it. He also wants to move up, but he wants to skip the .44 and go directly to the .50. It ain't going to happen. ;)
