.44 Magnum VS .44 Magnum

Both are very fine pistols. I think, in this case, barrel length is immaterial.
I own and have shot my .44 mag. Redhawk many thousands of times. If you plan to get the DA, do practice, practice, practice shooting it in DA. If you are not practiced, speed in follow up shots means nothing if you pull off target. It is a matter of personal choice.

The SA fits ME better so that is what I use. Find out which you are the most comfortable with and go to it.

Reload? at a charging bear? Good luck!

Redhawk....

Easier to handle a 4" plus double action. For self protection I can't see using a single action.

+ 1 for Redhawk

Even with a 4" barrel, I'd still choose the Redhawk. Double action, is a little faster, and the Blackhawk rolls your hands too much for a quick accurate 2nd shot........

Davelandrum,

Whats so funny about my statement?
Double Action Revolvers are faster to load, and you never know, you may be atacked and have a chance to reload.
Say there are more than one bear, you kill the first, and another one is closing in on you.
I see the swing out cylender as an advantage in a life and death situation.

TX - I have never in my life heard someone use reload speed in the context of a bear attack.

If you have time for a reload, you are not under attack, and the thought of trying to reload while being used as a pinata is just hysterical.

With a closing speed over 30 MPH, you are going to be doing some serious shooting just to empty a cylinder if you are trying to aim at all.

Of course, the last three rounds you probably won't have to aim too much:p

I own an S&W custom shop 44 mag "snubby" revolver.
This is a real monster!
As time goes on I will begin to show pics of my toys:)

I don't think I would worry much about reloading either. The hunter being mauled that I mentioned managed to get one shot off before the bear knocked him down and started chewing on him.

David said there was 10 inches of snow on the ground and the bear was kicking black dirt in the air coming after the man so hard.

ZERO JUNK,

I guess the Single Action would work alright.
I like the feel of them better, and to me they are much better looking.
I just worry about making a reload.

My vote is for the Redhawk. Double action for flexability (Can be used DA or SA) and 4" barrel for portability. (That 7" barrel would be tedious to carry around.)

Love my SBH, but between the two you've listed, for the application you specified, four-inch Redhawk. A good compromise would be a 5.5" RH. But I'd definitely go DA.

I sy go with a 5.5" Redhawk if you can

All things being equal, the slightly longer barrel will give the bullet more velocity which can't be a bad thing. Also, in the event you get to use your sights, you'll increase your margin for error since the longer sight radius will improve accuracy. I'm not convinced the extra 1.5" will result in a slower draw. I think that is entirely up to the shooter and their skill level. I saw a discontinued blued Redhawk in the configuration I'm speaking of some months back (with wood grips, too) and it looked stunning. Out in the elements, SS all the way with goodyear grips.

Single action is cool, but when four legged large mammals are involved, I'd feel a lot more confident with DA.
