.44 magnum, is it practical????

Double Aha. I was sittin here wondering what the acronym meant. :p

Now I feel old. What ever happened to small/medium/large/dangerous? :D

Them whippersnappers and their newfangled terms.

What ever happened to small/medium/large/dangerous?
Hey, that's too easy - need to market that ammo somehow! Uh-oh - you're going to try to use that medium game bullet on CXP2 game??? Better get you a few cases of CXP2 ammo quick! :D :D :D

Thanks for the Info Guys!

thanks for all the input guys, i am not sure if i will buy one, based on price of ammo, and the fear of the bullet going through walls. i live in an apartment with my family, and wouldnt want any innocent people being hit with a huge .44 mag slug. i really like the Glock 21, but still kind of feel that the USP40, does pretty much the same thing. back to the point. you guys opened up my eyes to other things to consider, i never thought you could put .44 special ammo in a .44 magnum, i am so use to semi-auto pistols, i am very new to revolvers. well i still like the .44 magnum, the whole idea of all that power , almost like holding a true handcannon. maybe i should rent one first, i hope to be going to the range this upcoming week, so maybe i will rent one finally. well once again, thanks to all of you who replied with some much need information!

I love the .44mag ! but in a urban home defense situation I do'nt reckon you could go past a 38 special ! The simple fact is that when the ecreta hits the ossolating device at a great rate of knots (the **** hits the fan )Trust me I've been there ! It ain't like the movies ! The bad guy has already made up his/her /it's mind what it is going to do if disturbed /caught ! You on the other hand are dis advantaged from the word go as you the victam ! The ensuring battle will take place at a distance of a few feet (if the bad guy is'nt already on you !)weither it be a 38 or a 150mil howiser the range is going to be very close if it comes to the point that you've got to pull the trigger! The chances are that Charlie Cretian is going to see your armed & back off & find a soft target somewhere else or it's going to come at you like a charging bull elephant !The revolver wins out here as if it's been sitting loaded as purly a HD weapon & it decids to mis fire all you have yo do is pull the trigger again not try & clear the chamber!
At the risk of being howled down here just remember once you've pulled the trigger & put the bad guy down & he dies! Although you've done society a great service .....You have to live with your actions for the rest of your life !

29 v Glock 21

Find someone who has each [.44 Magnum and Glock 21] of the guns you are considering. Shoot both of them. How I judge the caliber and gun is THROW THE GUN UP AND fire away. The one you can hit with the best is the one to depend on.

I think if you handload, the 44 magnum is hard to beat for versatility. You can load it for wild boar, or rabbits.

Put it this way, from my experience a .44Mag with hearing protection on is almost as loud as a .45ACP without hearing protection.

You need to get better hearing protection! I never had my ears ring shooting a 44 mag with hearing protection. But I have have had my ears ring shooting a 22 handgun in a covered range after one shot without hearing protection.

In one episode Dirty Harry was discussing loads with his partner (played by Tyne Daly) . He told her that he used loads that were like those of a .357- in the heavy .44 it gave him a lot of controllability.

Actually Harry said it to the rookie vigilante cops in "Magnum Force" - mentioning that he used a "44 Light Special" what ever the hell that is suppose to mean? A load lighter than the standard 44 Special? He then goes on to say "This size gun gives me better control and less recoil , then a 357 Magnum with wadcutters."

phooies

Ammo cost (if yer buyin') is a significant factor.

The Glock 21 is too big for my hand (had to sell a M20, even after a 'grip reduction' = ARS = fine job, BTW); I use Redhawks (357, 41, 44, and 45 Colt) for USPSA; I think the gun(s) you already have are fine for HD.

If you want a new gun buy the one you like; if you want a new gun for use as a specific tool consider carefully the need.

Did I mention I just won a Glock 17? :D

I used a .44mag. 5.5" RedHawk for HD for a while years ago. Loaded with .44special lead hollowpoints. With those loads it was like shooting .38 wadcutters, hardly any recoil at all. Easy to control even with one hand. Not much muzzle blast either (MUCH less than most .357mag. loads).

As for the Dirty Harry quote, that comment was made while they were getting ready to shoot in a police match. The gist was that he used light loaded .44 specials in competition to get an edge in controlability. The extra power of the .44mag. loads wasn`t necessary for shooting at cardboard. He never said he carried specials on duty. Marcus

I don't reload, and my own bias is that I only want a gun with cheap, readily available ammunition with wide variety. Only revolver calibers for me therefore are .22LR, .357 Magnum, and .44 Magnum as a result... I have the .22LR and the .357 Magnum... mebbe someday a .44 Magnum - we'll see... first want to feel that I've mastered the .357, and then need to think of some creative rationalization for me getting the .44! :D

I bought a 629 and have absolutely no practical use for it except I think it's fun to shoot. That is, fun as long as I'm shooting my plinker handloads along with a few full-house loads. I t ink it's the most accurate revolver I have. one-handed shots are no problem with plinkers. I can't imagine trying with commercial ammo.

big guns hot loads one handed handloads

Can't become proficient without burnin' ammo; gotta be rich to buy enough 44 Mag.

Made 204 PF at the 2003 AWARE; 44 Redhawk.

I've got a Ruger SuperBlackhawk that I'm very fond of. Having shot it quite a bit I'm very comfortable with .44 magnum and can even single-hand a couple of cylinders without any problem. That said, its not an all day target pistol; after 18 or 24 rounds my hands have taken such a beating that they don't want to stay on target.

Stepped down to .44 special its a great target gun. I keep it loaded with magnums when I'm out on our family farm, though, and also practice with magnums more often than special to be sure I'm proficient with the round I actually use in the pistol.
