41 Magnum

I was looking at .41 mag on ammo to go. 50 JHP is around $36 and 20 Corbon's run about $27. This of course doesn't include the shipping and handling feed but it doesn't seem that far off from .357 ammo. Still, nothing beats hand loading.

"Since the .41 owners are watching this caliber bight the dust
ammo. manufacurers are declining to manufacture ammo for it." (MADISON).

Funny, back in the early 80's, I heard folks talking in gun shops and read in various gun magazines those same statements pertaining to the decline of the .41 Mag and now it seems much easier to find .41 ammo (as well as brass, bullets, etc.), than it was in the 80's! Given the amount of guns Taurus, Ruger, etc. produced in the last decade or two in .41 Magnum, I don't think it is going to "bite the dust" anytime soon...:D

the 41 has too much of a cult behind it and its just too good to die

its really better than the 44 for the majority of us who don't stroll around Kodiak island smeared in bacon grease

Nothing wrong with the caliber. There is a very big problem with the ammo manufacturers deciding it wasn't (and still isn't) worth supporting. Your own handloads will always be better than what the factories will sell you anyway.

Check out Cheaper than Dirt and Sportsman Gude for 41 mag ammo. Also GA Arms does an excellent job with their 41 mag loadings.

Local gun shops in my area don't have much of a selection of 41 mag. Some have zero or some overpriced loading. They used to until the 2008 ammo shortage started and have not restocked.

I first got acquainted with the 41 mag in 1990. At the time, I had decided that my Python 357 mag was a bit light for deer hunting. I have since acquired more revolvers in the caliber and have gotten very attached. Looking for a blue 6" M57 to complete my set. But then, I'll start looking for another set. So, no big thing.

Here is my 41 magnum safe queen:)

I was down to Tyler Texas this week and at a pawn shop (A-1 on the loop 323) there is a 4 inch S&W 57, real good shape, for $650 I think. It was a 4 incher. Locked tight and would be a mighty fine gun. Not reblued or mussed with. They also had a 1917 .45 ACP WW1 gun also in excellent shape. But at $895 I had to leave it behind to!

See I prefer 3 inchers and thus that is what I look for.

But just in case any of you are near there it's sitting there as of this week.

Thanks Kcub, I may keep an eye on that one. That is just the ticket! Not looking for collector stuff, just good clean shooters. My 8 3/8" M57 shoots better than my other 57's.

Proud Ruger Black Hawk owner. Mine is a .41 mag. I reload and components are not difficult to find. I cast lead for bullets as well. A very fun caliber to reload for.

It is a great caliber! It will never die. I have a Black Hawk too in 41 mag. Now, the 480 Ruger may die, which will make me sad. Need to buy a good supply of brass in that caliber just to "have". Need to remind myself to do that while it is still available.

Mike Irwin, how's that Colt doing? I thought you were looking for a 4" nickel M57? For blue guns, the S&W Mountain Guns aren't bad if you don't mind the lock.

I don't like nickeled guns, nor stainless steel.

Blue is the way to go for me. I do have one stainless gun, though, a Smith 4506.

The Colt is a good shooter. I really like it. Not too fond of the grips, but I can live with those.

My 8 3/8" M57 shoots better than my other 57's.

That's exactly why I want one. I have a K22 with that barrel length and it is capable of one ragged hole groups at 25 yards.

Well said, Colorado Redneck. I"ve loaded my own ammunition for 50 years now, and find that working up loads for a new acquisition or an old beloved partner is at least half the fun. I've also found that time spent in handloading is amply paid back in the form of better accuracy and custom performance. I've yet to find a factory load that will beat my carefully worked up hand load for accuracy, in any of my guns.

As to the Raging Bull...I'm not a fan of things Taurus...if I were to go to the expense of buying all of the necessary reloading equipment, then I'd get one of the first line .41 magnums to go with it...Ruger or Smith & Wesson would be my choices. Best Regards, Rod

Another proud owner of a 6" S&W 57. I don't shoot half as much as I like, including the .41, so I am limping along on factory ammo.

Superb cartridge that refuses to die.

Why, no! That never occurred to me! Thanks!

The bottom line is I had to buy a part I had already paid for.

The 29 is too light a platform for .44 long term. It's fine for the .41

kcub, a lot of people would disagree with that statement but actually you are right. A standard 29 will handle all of the factory loads you can stand but once you start loading bullets from 250 to 300 gr. over heavy charges of powder you will find out what so many silhouette shooters have found. It will beat the gun to death pretty quickly. The same frame and barrel in .41 is considerably stronger. (and flatter shooting)
