40 S&W: Which to buy?

Beretta 96. I have several other guns that are more accurate, but this one is very dependable. It will never shoot with my Kimber or my S&W 625, but it is a natural shooter.

Why is it that when the sigpro 2340 came out, everyone said it sucked. Now it seems everyone who's tried it really likes it. I'll admit it's a fine looking pistol, and the one I shot did indeed seem very accurate, but the complaints originally were that it was not a well-thought-out project, and the barrel length was not very good (long) relative to the overall size of the gun, etc. But now it's just rave reviews. What gives? Better than the 229? Why/why not?

Just gotta way in on this one. I have a Glock 23C and absolutley love it.Buy a Glock 23 or 23 and take the money you save over buying a Sig or HK and buy ammo to go practise with.

The difference between an optimist and a pessimist is the pessimist has more information.

I have a Glock 23C and a Sig P-226 (both .357 Sig and .40 S&W barrels). In my opinion, there is no comparison -- the P-226 is superior is every category: accuracy, manufacturing and materials quality, durability, reliability, etc.

I am frankly surprised that the P-226 has not been recommended in this thread. It is a full-sized autoloader, but certainly not too large for concealed carry. Also, it is ACCURATE and exceptionally well designed and fabricated.

I have heard of this happening with the Glock .40 S&W because of there so called unsupported chamber.A HK USP Compact .40 would IMO be the way to go. SHOKz

Futo,

I had a 2340 (traded for G23), and I still think they suck, however some people like 'em, so YMMV.

To answer the thread topic, I can highly recommend a G23. I love mine, and have nothing but good things to say about it.

Since I didnt see anyone else say it I will tell you. The great glock unsupported chamber debate always comes to the ammunition being fired at the time. To my knowledge 99.9% the ammo was non-factory reloads that were improperly made. It is extremely easy to overseat a 180gr bullet in a .40S&W case because the powder practically meets the bullet in the case. Over seat the bullet and the pressures shoot way up. If you look I think you will find the the kb!s happened to lead re-loaders, not persons shooting quality factory ammo. Buy a comfortable Glock, some cheap factory South African or Selloer & Belloit ammo to proactice with and you'll never look back.

SIG Sauer P229 or P239. They're tough to beat for balance, accuracy, and reliability.

So many pistols, so little money.

I own a bunch and I have shot a bunch more. If you can only buy one make it a Browning High-Power. It is accurate and the softest recoiling 40 S&W there is. Browning got it right the first time. In second place is the Glock 27. It is just plain a neat little pistol that you can do a lot with and to. You will not be sorry with either of these two. Remember to beware of the FN 49 as it is truly a POS! Regards, Richard.

Negative, .40 Auto and .357 SIG also (which then allow the possibility of interchangeable barrels). They seem to be pretty scarce in all flavors, though, probably due to LE/Mil contracts.

I would have to second the Ruger recomendation. Rugers are tough as nails. They may be ugly as HE!!, but they will always work and not go KB!

I really like my early Ruger P94 in .40 Auto with its 11 round mags. It's as accurate as can be with me behind the trigger.

I assure you the P-226 is available in 9mm and in .357 Sig/.40 S&W.

I like the Glock 23C with an extra Bar-Sto unported barrel.

Browning Hi-Power!

Shoots great, never jams, great trigger, points naturally, feels good, digests anything put into it. And is heavy enough so that if you run out of ammo you can club the opponent!

Love my HK compact .40 USP. HK originally built the USP line for the .40 ground up. So I total confidence in it's design and safety.
It was an easy transition for them to chamber it in 9mm since the USP is inherently stronger already.
