4 year old draws picture of a gun-dad gets arrested

It's just sad. Maybe we all need to think about what a great country the USA is ... notwithstanding all her faults ... she is still the only bright, shining light in an otherwise dark, unfriendly and dangerous world.

^^^Yes we ought to.

We need to be thankful for our Constitution and thankful for the many over the years willing to stand up for our gun rights. We've surely had a few anti-gun administrations in office over the years that if it wasn't for the pro gun people having a backbone, would have crippled our gun rights dramatically.

We also need to support the pro gun organizations in the states/cities in the US that have the less friendly/communistic gun laws. Our gun laws, although not perfect have not been given to us by the anti's. We've had to fight to keep them. We have clearly won many battles but have not won the war.

As shocked as I was at reading this story I cannot help but think there are places here in the US of A where this same thing can happen.
And I was involved in a somewhat similar situation a bunch of years ago.
We were doing poster contests for EMS week at the elementary school and the 1st grader class was given the band-aid as a theme. We received the stack to judge a winner and come across a drawing of a grave w/body and a pool of red around body and a stick figure aiming a gun into grave with bullets dotting from gun to body and the words, "I Can't Stop".
I being a firearms instructor and EMT suggested we bring this poster in to the school office. Well they were very aware of this young student and assured us that everything possible was already being done.
fast forward 5 years and the 1st night of Firearms Safety that year within 20 min of the start of class a youth pulls a revolver out of his waistband!
I ordered the student to freeze and got behind him and got control of the revolver. It was a sports starting revolver that we learned he was aiming at kids and firing!
The Police were called and they knew all about this youngster and were not overly concerned because the family was in the process of packing to move out of state.
My WAG was they didn't want to slow down the exodus of that family.
As to the State they were moving to,....
Where do you say you are at jgcoastie??

My four year old girl loves shoot my mark ii. I have to help her hold it. She also shoots a pump .22 rifle that I grew up with and now wants a pink cricket for her 5th birthday. She is gentel around them. Knows the power they have and won't touch them without getting permission.

I have started my own children & grandchildren out at an early age and my daughter just told me a few days ago. Look at Ryder there, you had Logan shooting at his age and there is no way you are going to let this one shoot for a few more years!
Each child is different in development and interests but I have to confess that Logan was also to young and had been to the range dozens of times along side older cousins whom i had taken to the air rifle range weekly for a long time so he was much more exposed to shooting than , sadly the younger ones.
Now a Mk II for a 4 year old? Really!
Where is the line?
This video is a sad reminder of crossing the line. :(

Unlike Canada's officialdom, I feel that NOT teaching children about the safe and proper use of firearms is child abuse.

Generations of Americans have grown up with firearms in the home without becoming mass murderers. I imagine more than a few Canadians have also.

I appreciate the post. It is a good remider to think something through before you allow your child to participate. With the mark ii when I help her hold it, I have a firm one hand on it, and light second hand over hers so basically the only thing she actually does with it is pull the trigger and in no way in control of supporting or holding it. The awkwardness is a big reason she will be getting the .22 cricket is to able to learn the responsibility of controlling something she is able to.

I am teaching my three daughters firearm safety and basic marksmanship.

They've also seen some of my trophies and they've asked about them and I told them they were competitions for shooting rifles or handguns.

My oldest daughter mentioned to her class that her father shoots guns. That's all she said.

I got a call from the school counselor and got the third degree about it. The woman seemed not to be listening to me when I told her my firearms were locked and not accesible to children. Despite what I told her - she went on to tell me about the dangers of children with firearms and the school's zero tolerance policy. I told her I thought the school's zero tolerance policy was a good thing, and I was sure it could only protect my children, and my kids would never run afoul of it becasue there was no way they could ever access my firearms. That seemed to anger her so she took another five minutes of my time repeating verbatim everything she had said previously. She obviously had an agenda - to convince me that guns are bad and that I needed to get rid of them. Why repeat her shpeel after I acknowledged what she had said and told her that my firearms were secured? She wasn't satisfied with that, she didn't like that option - that I had firearms but that they were secure. She wanted to impose her will on me - which meant getting rid of my firearms. I also got a call from the school nurse shortly after that. The tone of that call had a different bent - it seemed to be aimed at determining if my house was a safe environment for my children and if the kids were in danger in my house. The nurse cited statistics about the children killed with firearms etc...

It was very alarming. I was afraid that there would be some follow up visit from DCFS to ensure that my firearms were indeed secured and locked up.

My son wears his Guns and Hoses shirt to school a lot, it is a benifit wjere the firefighters boxed the police. Guess who won? them firefighters hands down... Not one teacher has said a thing :) I just love it here.

That kinda thing is why I have had some discussions with my (then) 8yr old. I've told him that there are two things we DO NOT DISCUSS with non-family members. The first is money. The second is guns.

This resulted in a long talk that covered a lot of ground. I like to think he gained something from it. I know I did.

And then we went to the rifle range for his first time. Then we hit the batting cage on the way home. It was a great day.

I'm also reminded of what happened to my friend,,,

She got a call from the school that their kid had violated California's zero-tolerance policy,,,
It seems the junior high schooler was caught reading a copy of Field and Stream.

The problem was that there were pictures of guns in the magazine,,,
Mom asked her son where he got the magazine from,,,
He pointed to the address label and said,,,
"I got it from the school library."

She threatened to take them to small claims court for damages,,,
She lost a days wage to come in for the conference.

This happened in 1996 in Riverside, California.

Hello Wag,,,

Not in California schools,,,
For over a quarter of a century now.

Here's another inane example,,,
A retired Marine Corp Officer is a science teacher,,,
He is barred from wearing short sleeve shirts because he has a tattoo of his Rifleman Badge on his forearm.

He had to sue the district who wanted to simply fire him,,,
He was told he will lose his job if it shows!

Don't ya just love Zero-Tolerance policies?

Aaron, I moved out of CA about 5.673 years ago, though not for these reasons. In hindsight, though, I'm glad I did.

Dang.

When I first saw this story I was just floored, but some of the examples you guys have listed are even worse. I know one thing...I will not be moving to California!

At least the Canadian press has been all over this. They are definitely not above calling the teacher, principal, police, and police chief "idiots" and "morons."

My favorite part of one of the videos is where the commentator rhetorically asks the police chief "How long did it take you the determine that the crayon scribble was not a real gun?" after the police chief stated "At the point in the investigation when it was determined it was not a real firearm, the individual was released unconditionally."

Here are some examples.

Obviously in canada police can enter your house whenever they want if you are a registered gun owner.

In Canada, your home can be searched without a warrant at any time whether you are a gun owner or not.
