4-inch barrel, .357 magnum

I agree with Pezo, but for different reasons. The Python and the 686 are too pretty to take into the wild. The GP-100 with a 3" barrel is perfect. More perfect will be my Alaskan when it arrives. If it ever does...

Gp100

I've shot both the 686 and GP100 and I prefer the Ruger, The SW just wasn't comfortable for me and IMO the Ruger is more rugged...

"if you realy want a mag get a longer barrel i chronoed my 4" 66 taurus
with 158g hp only got 1100fps might as well be shooting a hot 9mm"

What ammo did you use? Remington 158gr JHP's get between 1300-1400 fps out of my S&W model 65 with 4" barrel.

The S&W model 65 points and shoot just right for me, much better than the 686. Try as many different guns as you can before you buy.

Wow! there's alot of different opinions here. And you know- everyone is right. It comes down to each person's personal taste, how the gun feels and handles for them. As for myself ,I like the 686. I have a 686-1, and a 586-4 4" barrels. I find them comfortable, reliable, accurate and nice shooting guns....Norm.

Too High!!! My dealer wanted more than $550 for one. Go to budsgunshop.com. He has them for under 500.00. $470.00 range!!! :D

Good Luck

BullRock

Hey BullRock, thank you very much! Its hard being a beginner when you dont know what stuff is worth or where the sources are! I am headed to that place right now!

Thats the 686 right? I am looking for a 6" barrel I think. I am a die hard ruger guy, but those new smiths feel reaaal nice! (I have not shot one yet though)

Thanks for the advice!

Well you all helped me make up my mind. I traded my old 6 1/2'' Taurus 608 blued, in on a new 4" blued Ruger GP100, just got it yesterday. And I'm very happy with it. Oh and by the way, nothing against Taurus,(I do own a couple)just like those Rugers. They seem to sit in my hand better.

For me, S&Ws or Rugers. I think Colts are extremely over priced.
That is because of the law of supply and demand. There are far fewer Colt revolvers now then there are SW & Rugers.
I only paid $269 for my Colt Lawman Mark lll in excellent condition. I was lucky to get it at that price. I paid under $850 for my Python. The moment I cocked the hammer on my Python, I knew it was worth the money.

On the other hand I'm looking at a SRH. I own a GP-100, SW 629MG, SW 29-2, SW 66, 2 1/2" barrel, 2 SW M66, 4" barrels, Ruger Vaquero, Taurus 85, and a SW 34...

The GP-100 is a fine handgun. Enjoy!!!

I own a Super Redhawk in 44 mag, with the 7.5 in barrel. A fine artillery piece. Also one of the reasons I wanted a GP100.

.357 Revolver

If stainless steel is not a must, I would look at the S&W M-28 "Highway Patrolman", it is basically an M-27 with a plainer "service" finish, N-frame, adjustable sights. I have a 6", plenty accurate, the heavy frame absorbs recoil better than a lighter frame (with proper grips of course). Not as visually
appealing as a Python or stainless S&W but as a wise old shooter told me years ago "You don't shoot bluing."
