.38 Special 110 Hydra-Shok® JHP Premium® Personal Defense®---Effective SD Ammo???

It has been stated many times on forums. Shot placement is the key to winning a gun fight against a attacker. A person needs to practice with their sd defense round offen. Target loads are great for fun but shoot differently from self defense rounds. With that being said. I would not use Federal 110 grain HydraShok rounds for SD in a snug nose revolver. I like heavier grain rounds that will penatrate 10 to 12 inches against attackers. A snub nose revolver will never have the same velocity as a 4 inch revolver. Too be this will cause a high velocity and lighter grain round to be ineffective for SD purposes. Because of what happen at the Miami FBI shoot out, the FBI changed there minds about using light grain high velocity ammo for the agents. The reason, lack of penetration.
For me, I use the famous FBI round. This is the 158gr LSWCHP 38+P round. The FBI round that is reported to expand the best is the Remington R38S12. Buffalo Bore and Winchester make a good FBI round like Remington. The other rounds that have had good results are Speer Gold dot short barrel 135gr HP and Winchesters Bonded PBX1 130gr HP.
But again practice and shot placement will win a gun fight more often than ammo.
Good luck with your descision,
Howard
