I love 44 Specials but for CCW the 38 fits in smaller revolvers. I know this because I own these two 44s but carry my M37 revolver the most. Regards, Richard :D

It don't have to be either or, good ammo is available for both.

The main advantage I see to the .38Spl over the .44 is that it can be had in a smaller package. One doesn't see J-frame .44Spl because they simply wouldn't fit (no more than 3 or 4 rounds anyway). On the other hand, I don't usually favor anything smaller than a K-frame. Neither cartridge is exactly a death ray in the velocity department so I figure I may as well have a heavy bullet if I can't have a fast one anyway. One of the grandest carry guns I've ever seen was a 3" S&W model 629.

8-9" of penetration is just fine for me.

I want my big honkin' .429" bullet to dump it's energy inside the bad guy, not go zippin' through into the drywall on the other side. I've got 4 more of those big honkin' .429" bullets to continue the lead poisoning test in case the first one doesn't stop the attack on my person. I'm not shooting into ballistic gelatin, re-enacting the Strasbourg Tests, or planning for the FBI Miami shootout.

Oh, and commonly available ammo? Who the f*@& cares? Nothing newsworthy, but WalMart and K-Mart are pretty much getting out of the handgun ammo business, at least around these parts. Internet ammo ordering is the way of the future, get used to it. Be the ball.

Myself, I went to www.cheaperthandirt.com and ordered up a bunch of Federal 200gr LSWCHP rounds for carry in my 696. I practice with 200gr handloads, ala' my Dillon SDB. Any questions? ;)
