375 Ruger

I'm thinking about getting one, just because. Can anyone give me some first-hand experience with one?

I Have handled the rifle, but have not shot one. It is a nice feeling rifle, and the caliber has good reviews. What is your intended use, or just for fun?

I got one for the same reason you got it. Mine is a Howa and I like it. If you want it just to have it, go for it. In my opinion, its way too expensive per shot, for me to shoot it regularly. I think its somewhere between overkill and insanely overkill for a hog. BUT, its fun to shoot.

I have a .375 Ruger as well built on a M70 action. Fun rifle to shoot but if I had my choice I'd get a .375 H&H. If you aren't reloading ammunition for the H&H can be had at more reasonable prices than the Ruger.

Recoil is tolerable but still quite a step up from anything else I owned prior. I've not shot it a lot but I did kill one pronghorn buck with it at around 250 yards. I've been wanting to try the 235 grain TSX bullet in it but so far the old 270 grain SP from Hornady has been my go to bullet.

I am laughing as I type this regarding the comment, "it is overkill or insanely overkill for a hog." You are right, but I think I just gotta have it. Ruger lists the guide gun and a Hawkeye chambered for this caliber in left hand, but the recoil pad on the Hawkeye looks to be almost non-existent, so I'm going for the Guide Gun if I can find one. Plus I think that the muzzle brake can only an added benefit.

I have a Marlin Guide Gun, .45-70, and I don't find the recoil with hotted up Buffalo Bore ammo particularly objectionable. How does the 375 compare to that?

I have a .45-70 lever action as well. The .375 runs about equal to it on recoil assuming you are loading to the data for the Marlin. The .375 punches much harder than the factory (trap door) pressure .45-70 stuff. The .375 is not bad standing, but it wears on the shoulder pretty quick shooting it from the bench.

If I could justify it (I already have a 7mm mag that'll kill anything on the continent and it's never been anywhere but the range), I'd love to buy a Howa in .375 Ruger with a Knoxx stock. I'm not the kind of guy who quibbles over standard length vs short action, etc, but .375 H&H rifles are just too long.

I had a .375 H&H. I turned it into a .375 WBY. I do not mind an extra long action if there is a need for it. .375 H&H ballistics no longer justify the extra long action. In an action that length, you can do much better than the H&H.
