357??

I have recently bought three NEW Smiths and two used ones.
They are all real fine pieces.

Why would you not buy anything new from S&W--GOOD STUFF!!

BTW, I also bought one new Ruger.

Ya'll think this is a good price?
I was just about to post about how you would probably hear from some people who would comment that $450 is an insane price when what do I see but:
$450 for a used 686? I don't think so. You can get a new one for that. Offer them $350 and let 'em take ya back up to $375.
Around here new ones go for at least $100 more than that. Most used 686s are well over $400, usually $450, though sometimes you can get a great deal and find one that is about $400.

Gun prices seem to be very regional. If you look at gunbroker most prices seem to be around $400 but when you add transfer fees and shipping you'll be around (or over) your $450 price and you won't be able to check the gun over first.

If the gun is in good shape, without knowing the prices in your area, I'd say that $450 is probably decent. Check around with other dealers to see if anyone has some and see their prices first but I'm guessing you'll be fine. If no one has 686s try to price another common gun in the case with other dealers, if your dealer usually prices his guns fairly I'm sure that $450 is fair for your area. Of course, it will never hurt to try to negotiate a lower price. Worst that will happen is the guy won't negotiate, best that will happen you may save $50+.

All this great advice. Thanks guys.

Anyway, I know I wont be popular saying this, but the GP-100 feels bulky and something feels strange about the spongy rubber grips. I much prefer the Hogues on the 686. The balalnce and fitand finish of the 686 is absolutly superb. probably the best feeling revolver in my hand.

The Taurus also felt nice, kind of like a S/W, The blue is not the best in the world. The stainless Taurus is nice. I know peole say the taurus is not the best Quality in the world, but the lifetime warranty is kind of tempting. plus I've had a little Taurus mod 85 CH for many years and have had no propbs with it.

So, it now comes down to the 686 new for 450.00 I found out, or the Taurus, which is of varying prices depending on where I go.

I think I will also go rent a SP 101 at the range today and try that just to make it more difficult. :-}

I had (and really liked) Hogue Pau Ferro grips on a Security Six and a 686, both 4". I wouldn't hesitate to recommend either the grips or the guns. Both revolvers were reliable and accurate.

I prefer any K, L, or N frame Smith, either new or used, but Rugers would work too. The new J frames I've shot are unbelieveably accurate.

Whatever you pick up should work well.
