357 vs 44mag lever gun

Based purely on the OP, I'd vote .357, due to recoil over long plinking sessions and the potential savings, especially if the gun feeds .38s okay. It's not optimal for hunting, but that wasn't the primary use as originally listed.

How well will a 44mag lever gun feed 44 specials

My 1990 vintage 1894S (ok, ok, it's technically The Wife's) cycles .44SPCL just as well as .44MAG, and that's pretty darn well...

The older she gets, the slicker she has gotten...

Only way to find out is to try it in a particular gun...
 
I bought my lever based on handguns I had. Being that I had two 45 colt single actions and hand loaded for it, I bought my '92 in 45 Colt as well.

If you have one or the other of said caliber above, that could be your option. If not, perhaps pick a handgun you'd rather have to pair one over the other and go with that?
