.357 vs .410: What's louder?

.357 vs .410

I shot a big rattlesnake with .357 while I was seated in the seat of an Isuzu Trooper. I leaned slightly out of the drivers side window, and shot the snakes head off. That was four or five years ago, and my ears still ring constantly, really bad.

What makes the .357 noise so unbearable has more to do with the pitch and the tone than just the decibel level. The same reason most of us find a 45acp more tolerable than 9mm noise. Shot shells typically have a much lower pitched sound. Also a longer barrel tends to lower the pitch. Most can easily handle .22 rifle, but when you fire .22 from a pistol, its a lot more intense.

Why does the person asking the question want to know?

I know all guns are loud. I shoot everything from .22 short to .460. I've been casually weighing the pros and cons of these novel .410s and was just curious.

There is nothing they will do that another gun won't do better.

I've read and considered the numerous discussions on these guys here and elsewhere. I've already got better options in .45 Colt. I just think it's a cool idea with a lot of diversity in application, and I'm weighing whether to take the plunge.

The 357 Mag. As close as I can come to an apples to apples comparison is with my TC Contender. The one on the bottom below can shoot 410 or 45LC. It even has a choke you can screw in so you can shoot bird shot in 410. I can take that barrel off and put a 357 barrel on. Have not shot them without muffs, but the 357 is more of a blast, so to speak, even with muffs.
