.308 for precision shooting

I'd go with a savage 12 for the 26" barrel and they all come in 10 twist so you're good all the way up to 208 amax or 210 vld's. Just depending on what you're lookin for. I've launched 155 scenars at 3000fps out of mine and they grouped at .25 moa out to 1000.

I read this to mean there is a 2.5" group on the target at 1000 yards. Correct?

If so, that's amazing.

It has happened with three shot groups a few times. Mirage plays the biggest part. The best feeling is doing it with a stock rifle. It absolutely still gets me going when I get to a target at that distance or further and realize I can still do it. Doin that with a 308 win & 155s will make you thank God for 175 or 190smks. I do use a vortex razor HD for long range though. It has a lot to do with everything. :p consistency is always the goal but anything more than a 10 MPH wind and it all goes to $hit. 2.5 quickly turns to 10 or 12". Now 190s are a COMPLETELY different story.

And,

A 175 SMK @ 2800 FPS will drift about 15 inches at 1000 yards with a 2 MPH wind.

Problem is not many people can detect a 2 MPH wind at 1000 yards.

Thats why you see very few cleaned 1000 yard targets REGARDLESS of how fancy and tricked out the rifle is. Again, the X-10 ring is 20 inches (2 MOA) across.

Let put it into prospective:

The E-Shilloette (military man size target) is about 19 X 40. Assuming you hold center mass. That means you have 9.5 inches left and right windage to play with. A 2 MPH full value wind is a miss.

The question is, is it a 2 MPH wind or 4 MPH wind???? How many here can honestly say they can tell?

I certainly can't, and I've been to Sniper School, I've taught sniper schools, I've shot the Lord knows how many 1000 yard matches.

The entry level model 700 on Snipercentral looks really nice. Pretty much sums up what I'm looking for. Anybody have any experience with one?
