308 AR Armalite or Rock River

I would go with one of the DPMS/SR25 patterned guns instead of the Armalite as there are a ton of manufacturers supporting that design package. While the Armalites are nice why limit yourself to their proprietary design? Also, beware of CMMGs offering as they have a lot of dimensional fit issues that arent in spec with the standard pattern. There are several reviews on You Tube that detail the problems.

ArmaLite is no more propitiatory than any other 7.62 AR platform. There is no standard like with the AR15. The SR-25 magazine may become the defacto standard in time, but there is still compatibility issues with upper and lowers with in the SR-25 mag users.

In the mean time there are tens of thousands of ArmaLite, Noveske, and Aero Precision rifles in uses.

I have not shoot the new CMMG yet but everything I read from owners is it's a great rifle and vary accurate.

I was actually under the impression that most of the 308's using the sr25 magazine were fairly interchangeable. thanks for clearing that up. With that in mind since I can no longer look at the MWS or OBR I think i'll be going with the Armalite

I have to disagree, the DPMS pattern is by far the most widely accepted and used by DPMS, Bushmaster, LMT, MEGA, Knights, Fulton Armory, POF, CMMG, etc. Armalite is really the only odd man out. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the Armalites, hell they we're the original, but the rest of the industry has definitely not embraced their spec. Walk into a gun shop and take notice what they stock more of the MagPul LR308 mags or Armalite AR10 mags which should lend credence as to which are more popular.

Whoever asked that Fulton Armory question, I have shot their 6.5 Creedmoor Dreadnought at almost 1000 yards and it was truly amazing. I have two of their guns in 5.56 and both are high quality builds but they aren't mil spec, which may bother some folks.

The AR-10B uses Gen II mags, these are based on the M14 mag.

Yes. I apologize for my slow brain and faster fingers. M14 based is what I *should* have typed.

Thank you for clarifying this and the other issues for me. I apprecaite it. I also have some reservations reguarding the LE901. I don't know if I really *need* a heavy .223 in conjunction with a .308.

Like I said, the SR-25 mag may become the defacto standard. ArmaLite has just released the new AR-10A that uses the SR-25 mag. The brands you list all share the SR-25 mag but do they share the same upper/lower design? I think you well find propitiatory parts with those brands. I may be wrong, I only have ArmaLite and Noveske, and they are 100% compatible.

Choosing a rifle based on what magazine it can use is just silly to me. The ban state guys can't use SR-25 mags, that's why ArmaLite went with the M14 mags in the first place. At one time there was a considerable price difference in the two styles but now days it's within a few dollars. One advantage with the M14 style is the increase in COAL the mag can use. This may be important to reloaders pushing the limits of the cartridge.

My solution is own both, I can't decide between the LMT or CMMG, maybe the new SR-25 ArmaLite. I like the monolithic upper on the LMT.

I have range time with ArmaLite, Noveske, LMT and DPMS. They all shoot really nice. The biggest difference I see is in fit and finish...and mags.:D

Madcrate I know you said you have a Armalite but out of the ones you mentioned having trigger time on which did you prefer fit and finish wise. Also did you find one brand anymore reliable than another.

Yes the bolts and carriers are interchangeable as are the lower parts kits. The trigger parts are direct AR15 drop ins save the springs and buffer which all are a little heavier for the 308.

I was leaning towards the Armalite but that was also in part because of the compatibility with Noveske... but I just found out Noveske has halted production of 7.62 components and rifles until at late 2012 (not keeping my fingers crossed for that date either)

Another vote for Armalite:

The above is with factory ammo at 100 yards, in the 16" carbine barrel. I also just bought a 20" SASS upper, which seem so far to be capable of exceptional accuracy.

The "2nd gen" magazines not very expensive, you can get 10 for $275 direct from Armalite
