.308/7.62x51 SHTF Rifle

Whatsamatta wit' those initials?

Doc Intrepid:
Request that a mod change the title of your thread to remove the "SHTF" if you want your thread to remain open.
"SHTF" is against TOS for this board.
just sayin'

Sheesh, they're just four initials; they could mean anything! How 'bout we change it to "WTBGU"
(which might stand for When the Balloon Goes Up)?

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the H&K 91 (or one of it's many variants). Like the M1A, and FAL, It has a solid pedigree as a battle proven performer, and a reasonable accurate hunting weapon. A tight locking collapsable stock that is easy to switch out with solid one for hunting. Yes, the trigger is a little grittier than the other 2 but can easily be improved. I have taken a few deer with my Springfield Sar8, and it cycles hunting loads fine. It does tend to bash the brass, but this would be the least of my worries as a SHTF gun.

I note you're relatively new to the board -

I'm just mentioning the matter to try to keep the thread open.

Here is Item 5 from the Forum Rules, click on the upper left item on the blue control panel at the top of each page:

¡Mea culpa! Yes, I'm a FNG, and I don't want to wear out my welcome. I've already been admonished for being "snarky" when I thought I was just being playful.

But the thread still seems like a valid one. Could we just call it "What if you had to depend on only one rifle from here on out?"

id go with a browning BLR 81 stainless takedown w/ a forward mounted scope. easy to carry when broken down and its stainless to help resist the weather... other than that it sounds like what he already has would do most jobs aside from large game hunting.

im really not a fan of bolt actions, i have one real left handed left hand gun and thats my lefty STAG arms AR15 but aslong as there is sufficient space between my face and the ejector there really isnt much need to worry ive been shooting my mini 14 forever and recently converted it to look pretty damn close to a m1a.

thus i really wouldnt be too interested in a real m1a but i have been eyeing hte socom II lately im really looking into putting an optic on my gun any how. I really wanted to try out that keltec RFB but i havent heard too much about it i like that bullpup design and the foward ejecting mean i can use it and my friends would be able to also

but in a non SHTFing world this gun would be for hunting when i go on a longer trip and for some range fun with some friends (we have a little tactical course of fire setup something like nutnfancy's)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned the H&K 91

Im partial to the M1A, but the HK 91 and its clones are fine rifles. Considered by some to have "AK-like" durability and reliability. A battle rifle if there ever was one. The PTR-91 fits your budget, real solid rifle.

If I saw you in the woods with one during whitetail season I would walk the other way in embarrassment.:o
The SA Scout with a 2.5x scope is quick pointing dream for whitetail, nice pretty wood, nice to carry.
It really fills both a tactical role and a sporting role without sacrificing much.

Laminate is for cheap furniture.
Actually laminate stocks are surprisingly strong and superiour to the cheap plastic composite ones coming from the factory on most rifles. they are also better than standard wood stocks because they are less affected by temperature change and moisture.
Also if you are going to use this rifle for hunting too you should really consider a light weight simple bolt rifle. Something more accurate than your semi auto's, and still would serve the purpose in a defensive situation. I would get this http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/10FCM+SCOUT
