300 Win Short Mag

Hey Mad Dog,
The 284 has become far more popular as the parent case for the current long range caliber de jour, the 6.5/284. It's also being adopted by the AMU and the USMC is looking seriously at this cartridge for sniper use. I think it's a great idea(push feed crap aside) as you can throw a 140gn VLD at 3000fps without problems from a 26inch barrel. A lot of civilian quasi-snipers are using them in either M70 actions or Rem700's and reporting good things. I think the short fat concept is a good idea, however I would have used the 416Rigby or 338 Lapua as the parent case since it offers an even larger base diameter and thus more capacity. You also have a bigger magazine envelope, which means you HAVE to redesign the geometry and hopefully they'll get it right. The screwed up feeding of the Rem 700 short action is my biggest bitch. Always with the bridged round feed jams. I don't think I'll buy one as I already have a 300 Weatherby mag, and that suits my hunting purposes just fine. I have stopped buying the 30caliber completely for long range sniping(I keep a 308 and 30-338 just because I already have them). Having switched to 7mm and may go to 6.5 in the near future. A 7mm on the same case might be interesting. A bit better than the 7Rem mag with no annoying belt. Semper Fidelis...Ken M

The dakotas are good cartridges. But the problem is this: The brass costs a GodD**med LOT of MONEY! I'm not going to pay better than $1/case just for brass for a minor caliber round. It's bad enough doing it for 338 Lapua. If Winchester makes the brass, it'll be far cheaper and can afford to shoot more. Barrel life and low recoil are also issues. The 7mm Dakota has fairly tame recoil(in a decent weight rifle) but barrel life has got to be fairly short(don't know for sure, but my 7mm Rem's get about 1500 rds from a barrel). 6.5/284's have gone 1800, some more. And recoil is tame. The 300 Mags tend to beat up shooters pretty good. New shooters especially. The short cases are more efficient, and have less recoil because they burn less powder. Longer barrel life also(marginal). It's not so much the longer range that's important, it's the flatter trajectory and increased wind resistance that matters. It allows more leeway in shot selection(on two legged critters, not four) Like I said, for real increases in range beyond 1000 yds, there is the 338Lapua and the 50BMG. Semper Fidelis..Ken M

My point is this:
Despite the cost of the Dakota brass, any of those cartridges can be had by resizing .404 Jeffries brass. One need not necessarily pay the extra money for the Dakota head stamp.
This being the case, why not (since we are all capable of operating a trimmer and sizing die set) make a short, fat cartridge that has a suitable rim diameter from .404 Jeffries brass and achieve the same velocities without the feeding problems attendant to the rebated rim on Winchester's fiasco?

Hey! Let's get rich!

Since any new more or less useful cartridge seems to become an overnite success lately, let's all cut in and build a brand new cartridge we'll call the REMCHESTER SOOPER ULTRA OMIGOD TURBO MAGNUM. We'll advertise it as carrying 30% more powder volume than anything on earth, it will have a case made out of the venerable coke bottle necked down to .308 and its ballistics will make a 30-378 look like a 30-30... We'll build a 26 inch barrelled, 7 pounds bolt gun around it and sell it cheap enough for anyone to want one.
We'll forget to tell wannabe customers that barrel life should be around 30 shots and the darn thing would be likely to make anyone's shoulderblades touch upon firing a 12$ a pop cartridge... that is most likely to fragment upon impact and make little to no tissue damage unless you shoot from 700 yards and up!
300 Ultra Mag, eat your heart out!
With a wink and a smile! :)

Heh... The price of brass...

I pay $2 each for prepped .22 PPC (0.070" short) brass.

I've got a 6.5/284 on the way. I want a 7mm/WSM.

Happily, I avoid all that BR nonsense that involves spending way too much money to see who has the best machinist:)

I'm debating getting a 6.5/284, I'll probably rebarrel this 40X of mine when I shoot it out. I've invested pretty heavy in the 7mm camp, and they have served me well. A 7 WSM might be an interesting replacement for my 7mm Rem mag, of course, I'll still have one to use up all this Norma brass(bought it on sale, 100 for $40) Semper Fidelis..Ken M
