.30 or 6.5mm Caliber decisions..

I ran some numbers a while back, comparing 30-06 to 6.5-06. The Swede will not be quite as good as the this, but it is a decent comparison.

.30-06:

.308 220gr SMK @ 2500 FPS drifts 17.1" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.
.308 200gr SMK @ 2600 FPS drifts 18.2" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.
.308 210gr Berger VLD @ 2500 FPS drifts 16.8" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.

6.5-06 or 6.5-284:

.264 140gr A-MAX @ 2950 drifts 15.6" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.
.264 142gr SMK @ 2950 drifts 14.6" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.
.264 139gr Scenar @ 2950 drifts 14.7" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.
.264 140gr Berger VLD @ 2950 drifts 13.4" @ 500 yards in a 10 MPH full value wind.

Either is capable of taking any North American game with the right bullet, although I would want something bigger for Grizzly Bears.

emcon5, I wouldn't recommend 6.5-06 or 6.5-284 to anyone unless they were dead serious on precision shooting, there exotic that almost have to be reloaded for and kill barrels very quick. You probably already know that anyway.

To the OP, 6.5x55 if you reload, if not 308.
I hope you moose are quite close though.

I do reload. So 6.5 is my choice, what kind of accuracy can i expect from this cartridge with a high quality rifle and handloads??
