30-30 vs 7.62x39

MM you missed the part of my arguement where I said that you would need to load a X39 in either a singel shot or bolt action where case length wouldn't be an issue. 5 grains of powder make the X39 and .30-30 closer in performace than the .308 and .30-06. I still prefer the .30-30 and I understand your reasons for liking it but the X39 is only lacking because of the rifle it is normally used in.

moosemike states:

"Nope. The 30/30 handles a 170 grain bullet at 2100 fps which makes it feasible for Bear, Elk, and Moose. the 7.62X39 does no such things and is not suitable for anything beyond short range deer."

7.62x39 has a 154 grain bullet. I don't think that 16 grains will make a difference. Besides, I wouldn't use either on bear.

Ive killed lots of game with 3030s and only hogs with the 762x39 but if comparing its performance on pigs it does just as well as the 3030 does at any range out to 200 yards. Like i said thats only one animal but ive found pigs harder to kill then deer and every bit as hard to kill as black bear. i wouldnt be afraid to hunt any game animal under 500 lbs at under 200 yards with a 762x39 with an expanding bullet.

I like and shoot them both- both in the rifles they were traditionally designed for.
THIS >>>> TPAWS Sez: 7.62x39 has a 154 grain bullet. I don't think that 16 grains will make a difference. Besides, I wouldn't use either on bear.
I sez: Im sure you mis-spoke yourself- the 7.62X39 runs @122-123 gr bullet, whereas the 7.62X54 Mosin Nagant puts out a 150-154gr bullet at a much higher power rating which leaves both of the other rounds in the dust.
Just for the fun of it, go to your shooting spot just before it gets too dark to shoot. Try the .30-30, the 7.62 Kalashnikov, and the 7.62X54... try using barrel lengths as close as possible. Compare recoil and muzzle-blast, heh. Good fun!

I own both, A Marlin 336c in 30-30win with Votex Viper 2-7x32 scope, SKS and CZ 527 in 7.62x39 with Leupold VXII 2-7x33 scope. the CZ is shorter, lighter, less recoil, flatter shooting, much more accurate and less expensive to shoot ( I don't reload ) I'd have know problem hunting anything 350lb. or less out to 300yds.

It seems the 30-30 has it for hunting but what about self defense? I'm just guessing but I would think an 170gr soft or hollowpoint would be pretty deadly.
Judging by what a 30-30 does to a deer I would say that it would be brutaly effective as self defense. For that matter any mid range hunting round would be very effective. 150gr Winchester soft points will leave a 2 to 2-1/2" exit wound.

Just like with many handgun rounds, heavier and uber solid construction aren't always best for defence against thin skilled mammals like us. To tell the truth, the 125gr. HP's available for the .30-30 might very well be the best choice. But just going by bullet design and other such things it would be hard to find a better man stopping rifle cartridge than a .30-30 using about any bullet weight.

But don't be confused, for a whole bunch of reason the 7.62x39 isn't comparable to a .30-30. Internet myth created by SKS and Ak fans.

I Dunno: mehbee those Herter's 150 gr soft points in 7.62x39 up on the shelf are a figment of my imagination....... wait..... (blinkblink.....pinchOW!) ...nope, still there.

Just because you have not seen it does not mean it ain't there..... the world is real big place, after all.

Think outside the bun

Hey guys, the two cartridges are different. Way different. Just because they both can throw a bullet between .308 to .310 diameter about 2400 fps does not mean they are the same.

Having killed over 50 eastern whitetail deer with the .30-30 let me say it is a great [eastern whitetail] deer cartridge.

Having seven grandkids that graduated from shooting BB guns, and .22s to shooting my CZ 527 in 7.62x39mm, let me say the "Little Russian" is a great shooting cartridge.

Sure, the .30-30 has more power. But, it costs more to shoot it. A 20 round box of .30-30 ammo is somewhere between $12 and $15. A box of shells for the Little Russian is $4.50. Those grandkids can sure burn up the ammo so while I have both rifles, I haul out the 7.62x39 when the kids show up along with a 500 round box of Silver Bear hollow points.

Sure, handloading helps but .30-30 cases suck green tomatoes. After 4 or 5 loads they get ready to break their heads off. You can reload the Little Russian cases until the primers won't stay in. But, hey, it's cheaper to buy the Russian ammo than it is to reload Boxer primed brass.

A good .30-30 lever carbine can shoot around 2" groups at 100 yards with issue sights, but most are 4" guns with factory stuff. My buddies AK is good for 4"s. My Little Russian [CZ 527 bolt gun] with its 2.5x8 Leupold scope is good for 1" with hand loads and about 1.5" with the cheap Russian ammo. All are adaquate for hunting, but the better sights and trigger on the Little Russian make it a winner when we are shooting targets. [Did I mention the ammo is cheaper?]

So, if you are choosing between the two for hunting, choose the .30-30. If you are choosing one to be fun to shoot, choose the 7.62x39.

Both are "better" for their chosen purpose.

When i carry my model 94, I feel like an AMERICAN!
When I carry my? Whoops, what is that peice of ? Oh yeah, I've never shot the Commie gun. I really don't know what I'd feel like.
I'll take the 30-30 anyday.

You would feel like a Real Real American if you were carrying an SKS that you brought back from Nam. :)
Know a Few Guys like that, I admire them.
