Art--you've got the key concept correct. You clearly must not shoot an intruder once he's down and is no longer threatening you with deadly force. That's what it means to "shoot to stop, not to kill." On the other hand, IF (and only if) deadly force is justified I want to make damn sure it really is deadly. That's the only way to guarantee my survival once my back's to the wall and the BG is about to kill me. A merely wounded intruder can still kill me. I'd still advise shooting for the torso, though, since that's the biggest target. The head is tricky, and hitting the face may just create a nasty wound. Teeth and sinuses can deflect even large bullets.
