7x57mm

I read where one of the most sucessful ivory hunters was a guy named Bell.
He used 7x57mm mauser with solids to kill the elephants. He was said to have perfected a difficult going away brain shot.
W.M.D. "Karamojo" Bell was his name.

that round is less powerful than the 06.

Globular Worming? Sheesh! The high today, here in Terlingua, was 78 degrees! Usually, through the summer, our highs are well above 100. This summer, few days above 100; we're running ten degrees below what's common.

bcarver, in Bell's day, it was a lot easier to get in close to elephants. It's one thing to sneak in on an unaware heffalump, but if you aren't absolute perfection you're gonna make an excellent substitute for a Frisbee.

Long time ago was an American Rifleman article on 30 cal bullets in various cartridges
What I gleaned was for a given bullet, like a 180 gr nosler partition for example, you could take a certain class of game.Between a .308 and a .300 ultramag, the difference is at what range.
What backs this up a bit is in their various penetration tests,at very close ranges, the 308 offered the most reliable deep wound channels,as the bullet could perform more reliably at 2600 or so than it can at 3200.
Better bullets have come along, etc, but the idea is still good food for thought.
Karamojo Bell wrote some very interesting books. He also used a 6.5 of some sort,Mannlicher I think.

Love that poem, Art. Though I'm sure that it is more difficult to get close to an elephant than it was in decades & centuries past, I'm also pretty sure that the 7x57 with the right solid bullet, knowledge and head shot, if you get within 100-150 yards, and you know your rifle, you can still kill an elephant with it with one shot. Or, of course, with a .30-06.

Re:arteatman

The other day I saw one of those dinosaur shows on one of the nature channels. The host said that during those days the Earth was much warmer then it is today. Then an asteroid hit the planet, the climate cooled, and the big reptiles were eliminated.

Now that we are in the process of warming things back up, I wonder if that'll bring the dinosaurs around.

As useful as the .30-06 is, I would consider it a bit light for the T-Rex or Triceratop. Hence, global warming will make this cartridge useless in a few years.:D

I doubt that the venerable ole 06 could down the formidable Esuvee.

However, it is very possible.

One well placed shot to almost any part of the pulmonary or circulatory system will surely bring that beast down...it might take a little longer than if you hit the "brain" located under the thinly armored "hood", just behind the "grill".

I can survive a 30 ought

: D as long as im over 6 miles away 30-06 has absolutley no effect on me..... I'm just that amazing.......:p
But really I think the 30-06 could take down ANY game animal in north america.Although, it would be hard to waterfowl with (haha I cant be seriouse on this post sorry im leavin!)

Sorry Harry, you're wrong. Not every animal. The .30-06 lacks the power to penetrate through the multiple layers of hide, skin, fat....well, actually the layers and layers of fat found on......

Michael Moore! :p

Over a hundred years old, and proven on everything in North America time and time again. With the advances in bullet / loading technology, I'd argue it just keeps gettin' better!
Having said that, I will point out that it didn't stop my dad's Lincoln Town Car, but it was a poor, downward angle shot through the front quarterpanel. I'm glad we weren't in it when his neighbor totally missed a deer and it hit. We called it the mafia staff car. He never got the hole fixed. :D

30-06 has already proven itself wherever game is hunted. Not everyone is lining up to buy new short magnum rifles.

If you're in the area this September, take a look at the stacked cases of Remington core-lockt ammo sold at the Outdoor Sport Center in Casper, Wyoming. This is probably the biggest distributor of 30-06 ammo in the region.

Sure it can, Harry. I still have about 80 rounds of .30 M1 AP ammo around here somewhere. Aluminum blocks aren't much of a nuisance to those rounds.

Michael Moore!

An interesting hypothesis. There's an open question as to whether Moore is H. Sapien or possibly R. Rattus Disgusti and there's no record of the use of a .30-06 to dispatch one of those. One other speculative writer claims Moore belongs to C. Balaenoptera edeni (Pygmy Bryde's Whale) due to his reported habit of consuming pizzas loaded with pounds of anchovies or herrings (the diet of the aforementioned whale). Further credence is given by the fact that the species is called Luulumbo in Malaysia and Moore is noted to lumber slowly wherever he goes.

Perhaps we should contact National Geographic to finance a special expedition?
