3 " Ruger GP100

They make 2 models of 3" GP,s full lug and 1/2 lug which did you order???

That's a good point...I forgot that they make two different models. Mine is the full lug (to handle recoil better). ;)

Well I really wasn't aware that they made to different models . I just ordered what they showed in there 2005 catalog . The 2005 catalog shows a full lug so I hope I'ts the full lug as I don't like the 1/2 lug shroud look . It just looks funny I think IMO. Otherwise it will be making a trip back in exchange for the full lug version .

The half shroud model number is: KGPF-330

The full shroud model number is: KGPF-331

The Ruger website shows a full shroud barrel for both models, but according to the website, both are still in production...personally, I like the way the half shroud barrel looks, but prefer the performance (less recoil) of the full shroud barrel.

Well I don't know how i'm gonna fair out then , hopefully good . The Model # I ordered is KGPF-331 so hopefully it is the full shroud model . I don't guess having the half shroud model would kill me . I just like the overall beefier look of the full shroud GP100 3"er. It would definately help with recoil & I guess we'll all see how I fair out on Thursday afternoon .

do not worry the half shround was cancelled out of the 2005 catalouge I know cause I specifically wanted it but had to "settle" so to speak for the full shroud . still love this gun. ONe of my favorites.

Well I did put my new Ruger GP100 3 "er on lay-away yesterday . What a beautiful lil gun . It has a 3 " Full shroud Bbl with the Smaller GP100 grips. I'm told the frame is the same size on al GP100's just the grips on the 3 " gun are smaller . I don't really know for sure if thats true but it makes it look just like a big SP101 . Can't Wait to get it in my hands to take it home with me . Guys if you like 3 " Bbl guns give this one a good hard look !

southpawshootr your saying the SP101's are more rock solid than your GP100 3 incher. Wow i'm really just kinda curious as to in what way.

I mean that, at full lockup, neither of SP101 cylinders move.......at all. My GP100 has a very slight, barely perceptable side to side play. It's still tighter than any of my S&W's except a custom PPC revolver that my dad had built from the ground up about 20 years ago and a 5 year old 4 inch 686. The tighter the cylinder lockup is at full lockup, supposedly, the more repeatable the line and better accuracy follows.

As far as the quote thing goes, highlight the text you want to quote, right click & copy (or use ctrl+c key). Hit reply, then you'll see a callout box at the top (line starts with B I U). Click on the callout box and it will provide you with a place to put your quote. Paste your quote and click ok and it's inserted into your reply. Play around with the different formatting keys and see what you get. You can't break anything.

3" questions

I'm looking at 3" SP101's and GP100s as well...

Is the GP100 3" available blue or only stainless? I never see the 3" at gun stores, they must not produce too many.

So the 3" GP100 gets the SP101 black rubber grips? I didn't know that!

Is recoil on the SP101 uncomfortable using factory .357s?

The DA pull on these two guns is heavy out of the box, especially the SP101. Is it pretty easy to get a lighter DA pull? Would a gunsmith just install some lighter springs?

LH2 - Ruger recently dropped the blued versions of the 3" GP100. The Blued version was offered only with the full lug and was not offered with the 1/2 lug. The 1/2 lug 3" in stainless was also dropped. There may be, and probably are, some floating around out there and Ruger may offer them again in the future but I believe the only version currently cataloged is the full lug stainless. On the other hand, the web-site still shows the 1/2 lug version but I think that is an anomaly. Davidson's recently offered sale prices on the discontinued versions and I picked up the ones I wanted. Just yesterday I visited my regular gunstore and they had just taken in a used full lug stainless about six years old (from the serial number) in great shape. Like you, I don't see them often floating around shows and stores so I snapped it up. I used to prefer the 4" fixed sight version with the 1/2 lug but have become very fond of the 3" version. Hopefully Ruger will see fit to expand that line again in the future but at least the 3" full lug SS is still available, although I agree they don't seem to be plentiful. BTW, I love GP100s and have a fair number in various configurations (to the exclusion of many other handgun types).

 That's what I was afraid of. I really prefer the look of the blue model. I guess I can talk myself into a stainless - they are a little less work to take care of.

First I'll call some shops looking for a 3" blue, and there is a gun show tomorrow, maybe there will be something there. :)

AFAIK, the 3" GP100 does not get the black grips...mine doesn't have them.

You're right. The Ruger site says "all models come with black rubber grips with rosewood inserts". I had misunderstood earlier posts in this thread stating the 3" came with smaller grips.

I believe the grip inserts for the GP100 compact grip that goes on the 3" is the same size as the grip insert for the SP101 (I think). If that is the case, you could order a set of black SP101 inserts from Ruger and simply replace the rosewood grips with the black micarta SP101 grips. Probably about 15 bucks or so...(lots of profit margin in grip inserts, I'm sure).
