I own all semi's & am just recently geting back into revolvers . I just purchased a Tuarus 605SS2 & am now thinking I really like the Ruger GP100 with a 3 " tube & fixed sights . Can anybody who may have one give any info. on one if you have it and how you like it . It will be a carry piece mainly in colder months here in pa . Unless of course i get it & really like it may carry all the time . Can it handle all the big loads of super hot 357's as well as the 38 +p+'s . I know Ruger's one of the toughest so would think it would be a great lil carry piece though a lil heavier than an sp101 . Thanks in advance for all of you pro's with the great advise . Oh and by the way i'm a newby here for just 2 days .

This is the very gun I got my father because of his arthritis. He loves the 3" and think it balances great. Yes, it can handle the hot loads but having made the mistake of shooting Remington 125 magnum loads recently - do you really want to? However, a lighter grain magnum should be nothing through this gun though. It has just enough weight to tame the harsh recoil, but still light enough to carry. I've become a big fan of Ruger; in fact, just this morning a former die hard anti-gun journalist, Margery Eagan of the Boston Herald, just wrote about her experience shooting. She loved the firearm she used at a class and commented on the "comfy grips" - a stainless Ruger GP100. ;) Highly recommended.

bshort64,
Welcome to the fold. You're gonna love it here. I sure do.

I carry the SP101-2 1/4. The only bad thing I can think of about Ruger is the "bill board" on the side of the barrel. My next revolver will be the GP100 because I believe they are the best and toughest around.

Thanks for the comments & information . I just figured the would be the ideal carry piece between the Ruger SP101 & the full sized Ruger GP100 . Of course being able to handle the full power house 357's is a + . I also kinda like the frame differance . It looks to be bigger than the SP101 but smaller than the GP100 unless it's just smaller GP100 grips on the full size frame. It says fixed site models have a small frame size . I'm only guessing it's an in between size of the 101 & 100 .

It's smaller grips on the full size frame. Frame is the same for all GP100. The 3 inch models, AFAIK, come with SP101 grips. This, the lack of adjustable sights, and the shorter barrel make the gun appear substantially smaller. I have one of the 3 inch guns, it's the one with the half shroud (I like this look better and it was on sale at the time). They're nice guns. Good tight lockup, although not as rock solid as either of my SP101 3-inchers.

Got to love those Rugers! No matter how much you shoot them no matter what you feed them you will never wear one out in your lifetime ;)

Dean thats what I keep hearing about the ruger as well . everybody seems to say the Ruger is virtually indestructable . I like you did have a Sp101 a few years back . Unlike you I sold mine I'm guessing for something I thought I needed more . It was a good lil shooter though i thought. ( even with full 357 maggies ) I have now been practicing to keep what I buy & not just go out & get rid of it .

southpawshootr your saying the SP101's are more rock solid than your GP100 3 incher. Wow i'm really just kinda curious as to in what way. I'm no pro here so i'm learning more everyday . Oh & by the way how do you do that Quote thing , I can't seen to figure it out . Is there a help section or something ?

My experience with the SP-101 was not good. It came NIB and the first time I fired it the cylinder locked up on the 4th round. Took it to my GS. Took it back to the range same problem. It is a myth that Rugers are indestructable. They're not.

They are good guns. The GP-100 3" is a fine choice. Great balance, great action, smooth trigger. It locks up great and is very accurate.

Every manufacture puts out a lemon once in awhile Bullrock, it's just a fact of life. Is it possible that your SP101 didn't like you?

It is indeed possible willbray... ;)
This is a Security Six I found a while back. The grips were so beat-up and smelly I had to cut them off. The rest is allot of dremel work, including the manual of arms on the barrel. It kind of likes me now.

This is what it looks like today.

I have fired several other SP-101's. MHO, the triggers suck! But if I ever need a defense attorney for anything willbray, I'm gonna look you up, because you take loyalty to a high new level... ;)

I have one as well. I like the fixed sight frame much better (for defenseive) than the boxier adj. sight frame. Youll love this gun. its my favorite for home defense.

I've shot 180 grain parittion golds. 130 grain hydorshocks and 148 grain fiottchi's .357 mag rounds very easily and accurately out of this gun. This gun can handle the hot stuff without a hiccup. It's more rugged than the similiarly sized smith K frame's. it was designed for the.357 mag like all gp's.

How coincidental that you should ask this question today...I just put 200 rounds through my Ruger GP 100 3 inch this morning ;) . I love this gun...reasonable accurate and, as mentioned, big enough to tame recoil, yet small enough to be a good portable revolver. Highly recommended. :)

I have two GP-100s and an SP-101. They are outstanding revolvers: accurate, extremely reliable, durable for several lifetimes, easy to fully disassemble and reassemble, and top-quality. I suggest you get this three-inch GP-100 and shoot it all you want, with whatever .357 magnum and .38 Special loads you prefer. You will not be disappointed.

This is just so cool to get all these great responces from you guys . It's great hearing from guy who have these great lookin lil 3 " guns & can lend some great insight about how they perform . I know I could go with the extra 1 inch bbl for about $18.00 more & get adj. sights. I just love the look of that three inch tube on a regular GP100 frame with the slightly smaller than regular GP100 grips. Though I'm rich by no means I just put a Taurus 605SS2 on lay-away on Thursday . Now I'm sure that tommarrow I'm gonna have to put that GP100 3"er on lay-away as well . Thanks a million guys & keep your input coming . I appreciate it all from you great knowledgable group of guys & ladies .

To know me is to love me , but creating harm to me or my family would surely cause you to hear a loud BANG accompanied by a huge amount of pressure to your chest just before you fall down

IMO you don't need adjustable sights on a short barrel .357 like this one...I think if folks want adjustable sights, they'd be better off with a 6" gun ;) .

I have a blue 3" GP100. I like mine and it shoots okay. It may be a tad large for carry though unless you're an LEO. It is my house gun.

Well guys I did it. I put a GP100 3"er on lay-away today . I had to order it & it will be in on this Thursday . I can hardly wait for it to come in so I can see it in person . I just know i'm gonna love this gun . I getting lots of good responces from you guys & it seems to be able to handle it all & more from what you guys are saying . I know it's gonna be a lil bit big for ccw . But if I like it as much as I hope to i'll carry it. I will of course have to find somebody who makes a good economical holster for it though. Probably need a good belt too. Oh & my Taurus 605SS2 will be in on Thursday as well . Can't wait !
