3" barrels

+1 for the 3" barrels. Look how balanced it is comparing to the same gun in 2" with the same grip.

Out of interest, how would a 3" m60 compare with a 2" m66 (presumably easier to find than a 3" m66). I'm guessing lighter to carry and harder to shoot magnums, but what is the difference in accurancy?

I agree, 3" barrels are neat. I just purchased this very lightly used 2 1/2" M66 for carry. I have seen a 3" Colt Detective that I liked really well, but the price was through the roof. The only other is my 3" GP-100...

Nice pic - so would you say the 2 1/2" 66 is a better all-round choice (over the 3" 60) - for .357?
Well, if you're asking me keep in mind I dislike small frame revolvers. They have their place for carry, but that's it for me. The M66 is a larger frame revolver and it would be my preference. I don't have a problem with the weight, because it's no more or less than my P01 winter carry. I haven't shot it yet but if it shoots anywhere near like my M66, 4" it's a keeper... ;)

Do people buy a 2" and a 4"? I wonder if production of the 3" would cause a drop in overall sales?

Excellent point...and in my opinion probably has a lot to do with it. A 3" .357 is (again IMO) the most versatile handgun on the face of the planet.

Just get a Ruger 3" GP100 ;)

I think you're onto something with the Ruger, mathman. How important do you think an adjustable rear sight is on a 3" gun? I noticed the m60 and gp100 has it, but the sp101 does not...

I don't think that an adjustable rear sight is important at all on a 3" gun. I think that it is only important on a gun to be used for competition or hunting...and in these cases, I would probably use a 6" gun (with adjustable sights of course). A 3" gun is pretty much a defense/camping/backpacking gun...and if you have to use a gun in these instances, I really doubt you'll be doing any kind of precise shooting ;) .

So just when I'm set on a shiny new SP101, I find I can still get a m66 from a local gunshop NIB! $410 - good deal?? Me? Indecisive? :D

Here's my new M66, with a 2 1/2" barrel. It has replaced my Taurus 85 UL. It gives me 6 shots of .357 instead of 5 shots of .38 Spl.+p. Not a very big deal, but it's a Smith.

This 3" Tauri M85 is on the way...

Guys,

Here is a pic on my new 3 inch S&W 66-2. I really like it so far, need to get out and shoot it and see what it does. The Boker was just for fun.

Enjoy

Well, I had a problem finding any 3-inch S&W revolvers? However, I recently had found an LNIB 3-inch, Model 64 and an Model 65LS(A 65-7)with the lock(But without the two-piece barrel!)so I bought both of these guns! I certainly do like the idea of walking with my "Lady" once in awhile(And, to fondle her too!)! It's a real "Pleasure"(That 65LS!)! :D

Nice looking gun P230!

I agree that 3" is a great compromise between the snubbies and the 4", and they look alot cooler than 4" also.

Considering a SP101 and GP100 in 3" myself. :)

LH2,

I would like to have a sp101 in .357 and 9mm both. I don't think they make the 9mm version anymore though. Now I will have to run over to Rugers website and check.

The 3" K-frame is my personal favorite from a balance standpoint. I have, or have had, one 2 1/2 inch Model 66, two 3" Model 66's, one 3" Model 19 (K-Comp), one 4" Model 66, one 4" Model 686. These in addition to various 38's, .22's, etc.

I find that I can shoot the 3" barrel just about as accurately as the 4" barrel. I could never get the 2 1/2 incher to shoot as well as the 3" guns. The exception was the 3" K-comp. That gun had a ported barrel, and the sight radius was the same as that of the 2 1/2 inch gun. Neither it nor the 2 1/2 inch 66 shot as well as the 3" 66.

My son now has one of my 3" 66's, and I carry the other in cold enough weather to allow a cover garment. This one is a 66-4.

last summer, i found a used 3" model 65 in a gunstore here in CA. that was a consignment sale. finding something like this in CA would be considered to be an unusual find. i'm not a stranger to snub k frames after owning many snub model 19's and 66's. except for a 3" model 13 i once owned, this model 65 was the first 3" k frame purchased in over 20 years.

the gun is in really nice condition. an obvious trigger job had been done, and the gun had been polished to a nice shiny luster. the original box with the original packing was included. only thing missing was the original grips. the gun had some kind of ugly name brand grips, that has been replaced with badger walnut boot grips.

3" smiths are out there.

When I decided to get my CCW permit, I found this board and did months of research before I bought a weapon. The permit process here takes 90 days so I used the time wisely. The first thing I decided on was a revolver, due to it's simplicity. After considering all the information here about an ideal carry gun, I went out and bought a new 65LS and have not regretted it a bit. I really like the gun and I really like the expertise that is shared here. Thanks.
