.270 or .308

.270 winchester or .308 winchester

I can't think of anything a .308 would do that my .270 can not..... other than cost me the price of a new rifle, dies, and bullets......
 
I voted .308, cause thats what I use. I've hunted with the same bunch of guys for over 30 years - since we left school. I use a .308, my mates use .270 & 30/06's. In all these years of hunting I wouldn't say one cartridge has dramatically outperformed the other. Choose whichever cartridge you want in an accurate rifle & learn to shoot it well. Then you will realize that its the person behind the trigger that makes the biggest difference between how these cartridges perform. Sure the .270 is slightly flatter shooting, but realistically shooting any of these cartridges over 300 yards will require knowledge of trajectory for holdover.

Burn less powder while achieving similar/equal results at 1000yds :) Other than that it's sort of an unfair comparison but i suppose thats where the 30-06 comes into play. I mean we are comparing a LA round to a SA.

I voted for the 308 but would buy a 7mm-o8 instead of either, I think it is the best of both cartriges rolled into 1.
 
The OP gave ZERO context as to the root of his question.

I flipped a coin and voted .270.

The .270 is a hunting cartridge; the .308 used mainly in combat arms although it is used to a lesser degree for sport.

1) I don't shoot at 1,000 yards, but if I did, it would not be with a .308. There are so many better choices.

2) The 10 grains or so of powder difference between .308 and .270 loads would, assuming $25/lb of powder and $600 for a new rifle, take more than 17,000 rounds to make up the cost of the rifle ...... and that's 17 thousand rounds that are not as flat shooting as the round I already have a good load worked up for.......

3) At the ranges I do hunt at, a 308 does not hold a candle to the .270 WIN, in terms of trajectory.
 
That's true i'm not saying the .308 is the most practical choice because it's not. But with the limited selection of match bullets for the .270 you can produce similar if not better results at 1000yds. After that I stated it's no contest .270 wins as it should, it's a long action cartridge with the ability to throw heavier projectiles quite faster than the .308
 
Neither of them is magic.You have to place your shot and use a proper bullet.
If you can do that,neither will give you any excuses.

The only reason its hard to decide is,they are both excellent hunting cartridges.

In the end,it just a case of you knowing your own preferences.

Myself,I would not use a poll to choose.
 
270 if you load your own ammo, 308 if you do not.

That's just based on the cartridges. If there were a particular platform that I really liked that was only available in short action then I would go with the short action cartridge, and vice versa.
 
Went with the .308. My first real centerfire was a .270 Parker Hale when I was 12 or 13 (nearly 25 years ago). I now use a 308 most of the time (or a round built on the 308) and if you think the .270 kills any better then a .308 you should try some different bullets (IMHO they kill as good as each other). The 308 has a truck load more choice as far as factory ammo and bullets goes plus I think the 308 is a great parent cartridge (ie: 243, 260, 7mm08, 338fed ect) again IMHO (like BlackOp's said) the best round that uses the 30-06 cartridge is a .280 (7mm06) of cause that is just my opinion.
 
voted .270 cause its what i have. i have 1000rnds through mine. clean my barrel every 10 rnds. shoots great still. reload for it. any 130gr. .270 bullet will give me 1 inch at 100 yrds. no need for a large selection of bullets. 3-4 inches at 300 yards with 4x and my shaky hands. just wish there was 130gr. military surplus bullets to buy. .308 for my next bolt gun. but im gonna buy a 6.8 upper. 80% of the .308. less recoil and less powder charge.
