As I recall, Winchester brought out the .270 in 1925, necked an '06 case down from .30 to .27 caliber. It was designed as a hunting round, and from what I can see, it is perfect as an all around hunting rifle caliber. It has great preformance, flat trajectory, fast, accurate bullet and much less recoil than a .308 or .30-06 from what I can tell, and both of those rounds have cracked my cheekbone pretty good before. The last time I shot a crow in the field with my .30-06 from a rest, I could have sworn George Foreman snuck on me and gave me a swift, HARD left jab! I got the crow, but that frigging recoil got me good! With my .270, with 130 grain bullets, she is soft, sweet and gentle with me, and just as deadly on game.
I have used various .270's in the past few decades to take game from woodchucks to deer, and love the round. Savage 110's, Winchester 70, Mossberg / Howa 1500, Ruger 77, Remington 721, Remington 7600 (pump). Take your pick, with a 4X scope, they all shot better than I could (or can), at 150 yards, which is much farther than most of the hunting shots most of us in the North East ever get. A quality bolt action .270 with a decent scope is perfect for just about anything in North America (not counting Grizz....LOL!). Pick 150 grain bullets if you go after Moose. 130's for deer, bear, hogs, varmints, etc.
