Voted for the 6mm Rem. Own a couple of 6mm Rem and a .243 and I prefer the former.

But, be warned, finding 6mm Rem Brass and ammo is difficult. Yea, you can resized 257R and 7x57 to 6mm Rem brass, but they can be hard to find too, especially the 257R.

Certainly not a problem with obtaining .243 brass or ammo. For me, this is the only advantage to a .243 over a 6mm Rem.

i used a couple of 243's for deer. 100gr hornady rn with a charge of imr4831. i got rid of them, but if i did i would go with the 6mm remington.
its just one of those things, guy says "i gotta have a 243", so i instantly go to a 6mm remington. i almost got a 6mm rem. but i decided to go with a 6.5 creedmoor in my tc encore(MGM Barrel makes 'em).

A 1:13 twist would be poor. Limits bullet weights.
Poor for deer hunting- yes. The above mentioned rifle weighs 23 1/2 pounds. Poor for deer hunting-yes. For my personal decision to not purchase anything but 55gr and 58gr bullets and to linger over prairie dog towns- not such a poor choice for me.

I've had both and they're practically identical in performance, but hadn't had a 6mm for many years, but lucked on a used .243 Win and loved shooting it. I gave that one to my grandson, but had my Rem 700, .22-250 re-barreled to .243 Win and love it for larger varmints. Then, I bought a Tikka T3 Lite for carrying around the property and for the other grandkids to shoot/hunt with.

When I buy a rifle, I like to make sure it's in a chambering that is popular enough that I can easily sell or trade it. The 6mm sits on dealer shelves and many are not inclined to take them in trade as often as .243's. (If I don't sell my guns, somebody may have to at some point.)

6MM Rem in Ruger#1

I have a Ruger # 1 with a 26 inch barrel in 6MM Rem. With slow burning powder it will do more than 100 FPS better than a 243. I think any longer barrel will do the same, However, on a bolt gun it gets unwieldy. But I sure do like the #1.

I have both but voted for the 243. The 6mm is a fine cartridge but unless load your own as I do the 6 is getting very hard to find! A real shame as it is every bit as good as the 243.

I got a 6mm and I reload for it. It was my paps and I got it 11 years ago. Never really thought highly of it. I shot the remington core lokt out of it. Was getting 1.5 inch groups at 100. Always kept my brass in hopes of one day reloading. Bought a press this year started reloading 100 gr gamekings in it now if I have it on the lead sled every bullet touches in someway. Now it's my new favorite gun.

I'm building a .243 now. Started with a Remington 700SPS Varmint 26" barrel, added a Timney at 2lbs, Wyatt Outdoor DMB, B&C Medalist Light Tactical and Badger Knob. I'm waiting on the DNZ 20MOA Gamereaper Tactical to get here. Going to pull my NF NXS to go on it and put the new NF SHV F1 on the 7mm08 when it comes out. Paint job will be Duracoat Woodland colors with the OCP Stencil pattern.

I had a Savage 10 Predator Hunter that I sold that was lights out but, I sold it for some stupid reason. Decided I wanted one for long range shooting at steel, predators and hog sniping and wanted it set up like my 7mm08.

Looking at loading the 95grn Berger VLD Hunting but have a bunch of 70 and 90grn NBT's loaded as well.

Also decided my boy was old enough to start shooting a bigger rifle and bought him a Mossberg Patriot Bantam in .243 for Christmas.

Midway has 53 different loads for the 243, most of which are available.

They have 4 loads for the 6mm, only one of which is currently available.

243 ammo will be around as long as you can buy ammo. It wouldn't surprise me if 6mm was a handload only proposition in ten years.

As pretty much established here by now, if you're going to buy ammo, get the .243. I have a Ruger M77 in 6MM Remington I got back in '79 and hand-load for it. I love the thing. Yeah, the .244 history and all that R.O.T. ad nauseum business gets old in a hurry, but I do love the history of that cartridge; 7X57 Mauser, .257 Roberts, .244 Rem., and there's even a 6MM Rockchucker if I remember right. kinda cool to have a little wildcat in the safe. I pretty much use exclusively the 87 grn. Hornady S.P. pill in my Ruger and it's a real killer on deer and antelope (though I don't goat hunt anymore). If I ever thought I'd ever have to re-barrel the M77 (which I surely don't right now) I'd have another 6MM Remington tube installed on it. Great caliber, and the way it looks from some of the posts here, brass is getting hard to find these days. Glad I have a good stock on hand, probably enough for the duration. Both my sons have cleanly killed deer with that gun, too, and it's kind of a running joke between them when they ask me, "Can I have the 6MM after you die?" I just tell them that should be quite a while...

6mm remington is all around the better cartridge. It is faster and the heavier the bullet, the more difference there is. If you load your own, your 6mm can be made significantly faster than 243.

It was noted by gun writer Rick Jamison that 243 can show strange pressure spikes in testing with 100 gr. With 6mm you get more uniform pressure.

i vote 243 win. ive never had the pleasure of using a 6 mm. i was sceptical about the 243 for deer when i bought it but 2 hunting seasons and three 1 shot kills (no tracking) has earned it a place in my safe.

I chose to go from .223 to 6.8SPCII and .260 Remington. From there it's on to the .308 and .338 WinMag. The .260 is faster, flatter and harder hitting than the .243, or the 6mm. JMHO
