22s can be effective.

AND the .22 Quick-Shock LR reaches about 1900 fps from a rifle and well over 1000 from my little TPH according to others who have chronographs. My use is only in the woods for wild or maybe rabid dogs -- but they are hard to kill even with the large pistols mentioned. I've had better luck over the years with my .22 pistol at stopping them and killing them. Although they don't all stop right away with ANY caliber.

And for stopping power; one of my close buddies is a deep cover dirtball motorcycle rider -- who unbeknownst to those he rides with is also a narcotic cop in a major city.
On a drug raid about a decade ago his partner shot a charging BG with his 12 ga pump riot shotgun full of slugs. The slugs ALL hit the BG as per the LEOs practice had trained him -- in the chest area. The BG killed the LEO with the empty shot gun and then the BG ran nearly 100 yards before he died. The heart, lungs, and thorax along with some ribs and organs were all pretty well mushed -- his spine was intact.

Some folks like the BG above just don't get it; they may be hard to convince.

It all comes back to shot placement again and again and again. It seems unlikely that even the best pistol would have stopped that BG with chest shots. Maybe what he needed was a few .22 LR Quick-Shocks to the cranio-orbital or in that general area.

Bill Jordan's support of .22Magnum actually makes sense, to me. From a 3" or 4" K-Frame, recoil is negligable, you can get 1,400fps from some modern loads and a few were hotter back in the '50s/'60s.

One problem we have with the .22LRs and .22Mags with the best handgun ballistics today is that they're all hollowpoints. I actually agree that in this power range, a "deep punch" makes more sense. But US ammo marketing *always* connects "hollowpoints" with "defense", regardless of caliber.

When I can carry again, I've got half a mind to play with the CCI MaxiMag +V loads, sealing the JHP cavity with high-grade epoxy pushed deep in with a toothpick. Something like JB-Weld (aka "The Glue Of The Gods") you'd get an "AP effect". Maybe too much; at 1,400fps from my 4" MiniMaster, it's possible they'd blow right through level IIa kevlar :). Which isn't my intent!

Gotta think that one through...

Jim

.22's are good for self defense if it is the only available we have. But if you are really a gun nuts and had experience the difference of power between .22's .38 and the military cartridge 9mm and .45, I think you will not be carrying .22 caliber.

In fact to those who has 9mm and .45, they will be more in favor to hold their .45 frequently. Just my own opinion, comparing both 9mm and .45 as to which I like to use frequently for any purpose expecially for self defense, I will favor .45, so it would be hard for me to carry .22 but as others say, carry what is comfortable to you.

While this is true, if you can hide that Beretta, you can also hide something like the Keltec P32. It's not a .357 Mag, but it's way more effective than .22LR if you need a gun.

Survivor Series XXII

Each week a member of the group is shot with a 22 LR in the chest. If he or she lives to the next week, they can stay in. The last

Who is signing up for the show?[/quote]

Let's make this a fair comparison. After the member is shot with the .22 LR, he then gets to shoot back with a .45. I'll bet that more of the guys shot with the .22 will be living at the end of the contest. :)

That's true in rifles, but a .22Mag won't get anywhere near those speeds from a short barreled pistol. If you have a rifle for defense, there's no reason not to chamber it for a real cartridge that will be a real stopper!

JohnWill, I did not post that.
A 32 is more effective but the ammo is expensive and discourages practice. It is placement that counts with minor calibers.

Any centerfire handgun will have more expensive ammo, I don't see that stopping most of us from carrying one. Cheap is not a good selection critera for something that you're depending on to save your life.

As far as practice goes, you don't need to practice with your carry gun to the exclusion of all other guns, any practice with any handgun will improve your skills. If money is really an issue, do lots of shooting with your .22 and enough with your centerfire carry gun to remain competent. I still see no good reason to carry a .22 for defensive use.
