.22Magnum vs 5.7X28

What do you guys think about the 5.7x28 for self defense. Do you think the round would do the job. Im sorry I have a hard time trusting a 40gr. bullet compare to my 115-147gr. 9mm and 160-230gr. 45ACP. I kno the 9 and 45 have special loads with different weights but thats about the standard variation. The 40gr. bullet maybe going 2000 ft/sec but a good fast 9mm load can be doing 1,200-1,300 ft/sec and its 115gr. I saw a 100gr. 9mm Powerball that was doing about 1,400 ft/sec. It seems the 5.7x28 is only really good for penetration, any thoughts.

The penetration of the 5.7x28mm is more than adequate enough, and the tumbling effect creates a large wound channel. So I think it is a valid SD round.

Working p/t behind the LGS counter, I see a degree of near - fascination with the .22 WMR round in handguns. (Almost like the fascination behind the .410, but that's another topic...)

Many people do a quick-check of a ballistics chart, more often than not seeing what a .22 WMR does in rifle-length barrels and immediately conclude that it is a 'near-.357' in a small package as far as energy figures go.
Their conclusions are even reinforced when shooting a .22 WMR out of ANY short barrelled handgun - nice fireball and ear-splitting report if one happens to omit hearing protection.

I once heard that a fair comparison is that a .22 WMR in a handgun (2"-6") is about equal to a .22 LR HV fired from a rifle.
So, when asked by folks seeking a CC/Personal Protection gun, I try to relate this.

"What do you guys think about the 5.7x28 for self defense... (?)"

There are some nay-sayers but, to me, The Fort Hood incident alone offers quite convincing (though tragic) evidence that it IS effective.

I knew a USMC pilot that dropped 2 VC w1" barreled 22 mag. saved his life. He could not have done that with a larger handgun as the VC would have taken it from him, as they had his 357

Have shot a friends FN 5.7 and also his AR with a 5.7 upper with suppressor on it alot.
Both are really fun. Shot the pistol at clay birds on the 100 yd. berm from sandbag rest - hit'em with surprising regularity. The bullet is there right NOW.

The AR in 5.7 with suppressor sounded like some sort of weird pneumatic tool.
