.22Mag vs 38

f a woman can't control a all steel j frame or air weight with some 38sp load find a bersa thunder her HER to try. There 16oz CC model holds 8 rounds up to the 20 oz 15 shot thunder plus. Don't allow a lady to think a 22mag j size revolver is good enough. Matter of fact get her in touch with other lady shooters and she will find that out for her self. Men tend to screw up more often than not when helping ladys.

I've had a number of rimfires fail to fire over they years, but then I've shot thousands upon thousands of rimfires.

Unless I couldn't handle the recoil of 38 special, I can't see ever chosing the 22 magnum over the 38 for personal protection. I'd feel far more comfortable with the much larger and heavier 38 bullet.

Am I the only person who has never had a rimfire round misfire on me? I trust those little buggers more than some of the centerfire stuff being sold.

Yes, I agree. Federal Blue Box, CCI Stingers and WMR are very reliable. I have never had a CCI WMR fail in our Single Six. Not once.

The recoil issue is the dominant reason I would consider the new Ruger LCR in 22 mag. I'm not worried about 22 mag ammunition reliability. Never had a misfire so far, but I have not shot thousands of rounds either. With a double action revolver, all you have to do is pull the trigger again if you have a misfire in either 22LR or 22WMR.

"38s are notoriously underpowered on human targets,"

Where are the data that allow you to make such a definitive statement?

We "Macho" pistoleros do not recommend the 22LR/22 WinMag as a first, second or even third choice for self defense but they both beat fists, feet and foul language. As a Life Member of SNM (Sons of Neanderthal Man) I always recommend a steel frame for its recoil dampening qualities and if the lady in question has some problems with gripping and holding it some sort of exercisen and strenghthening program is the best way to address that problem. A too heavy trigger pull can often be dealt with through an strengthening program, lots of dry fire, which will also help smooth the action on a NIB-or even a used handgun.
The inadequacy of the 38 Special came about with the increasing use of recreational drugs, IMHO.

These are very unexpected post(s),
its true you can go several hundred rds without failures
from rimfires but then you encounter 3-4 in a box,
I have never met anyone who shoots much say they have never had a misfire on rf

The thread is about the .22m and I can honestly say I have never had or even seen a .22m dud. Fine, you want to throw in .22lrs too........ In 1000's of rounds I've exactly one dud MiniMag.

Just to muddy the water...what about low recoil ammo for the 38?

well the problem is that, the BEST expansion in the 22s comes with the new golddot or critical defense ammo. those at best in a typical 4inch barrel expand to .25-.28. all other rimfire ammo NEEDS the longest barrel you can get. a snubnose doesnt put much barrel length.

now on prices, the gold dot or critical defense loads, are going to cost as much as a box of 38 special. i mean, i can get the 100 round pack of white box 38s for 33 dollars, when they come in. but to get rimfire...... your going to have to lube up for the online retailers.

I'm set up to reload 38 Special and 22 Mag can't be reloaded at all.

I can make a 38 as powerful or as light as I want. Between the two, it's a no brainer for me.

Well rimfire priming is rimfire priming no matter what cartridge it is,
but if some of you never have misfires good on you

I have had rimfire misfires but none at critical moments and most were with semi-autos. Those could have been deadly. I own both a very reliable Beretta 21 .22 LR and a S&W CHief Special .38. There is NO choice of which one is the best to trust!
I have found that the Beretta is sometimes a better carry gun than the S&W is simply because of it's weight and slim design
1 It tucks away neatly in the smallest places...
A ruger Single Six .22 mag with a 4" bbl makes a nice trail companion and franklilly would save your lif3 anywhere!

If you look you can find J-Frame 32 long revolvers for the same price a new 22 mag will cost you. They have light recoil and I beleive they would give you the same stopping power of a 22mag or pretty close.

That being said I own three 32 long revolvers and am lucky enough to own a S&W model 431PD 32 mag revolver. This gun is my best pocket gun. Its lightweight at 15oz loaded. It will match 38sp loades in energy and is easy to carry. I reload for this and the 32 longs. The 32 long loads I shoot get 850fps from a 2" barrel. They don't have the muzzle blast of a 22 mag but should be more effective.

I really like 22 mags and am all for getting her one. The only 22 mag ammo I have ever had a misfire in has been winchester ammo. CCI, federal and fiocchi has all been 100%. And the winchester misfires were from 25+ years ago so do your own testing.

If you go with a snub 38 go with a steel frame gun. A few more onces of gun weight really makes a difference in recoil.

I have a 432 that I got at a gun show when they were discontinued. It was being sold for $330. Great little gun - and you can find 32 Mag still. :D

I had a 22 Mag 651 and it was a pretty J but 50 rounds through it would jam it solid with unburned powder. I had to use a lot of solvent to free the cylinder.

Hey Glenn I paid $329 for mine + tax and thought it was little high. Not anymore. It was a good deal. My dealer called me and told me someone had traded it in and was I interested? Dang right I was interested. I had wanted a 32 mag revolver for a couple of years. And not the cheap H&R I had to start with that shot a foot to the left at 15 yards.

This has to be one of the best CC guns you can get. Lightweight and enough power to get the job done. Its always loaded and near at hand. I just wish I had a second one for the wife.
