.22lr HP = coyote kill?

I have killed quite a few coyotes with a .22, but I dont use hollowpoints.

Two things to consider.

Hides will not prime until a good sharp freeze, meaning that if you skin one now and pay to have it tanned, the hair will still fall out.

Now is the time that the animals are denning and raising young. If you kill an animal that normally has a litter, then you will allow a litter of young to starve. Spring is not a good time for hunting.

In Georgia you can hunt them with a air rifle to a 458 Wea.The old #2 lead shot to #4 buck was great for feral dogs and Coyotes. The T sizes in lead were great.I don't know what they offer them in now,or price.A coon so far has been harder to kill than a Coyote for me from with a .22 LR. to one with Buckshot.Luck?Only killed one Coyote since the 60's.They are a late comer to my part of Georgia.Distemper and ticks in their ears keep them killed down.Dog hunting for Deer takes a toll too.

Packs of feral dogs of all sizes are another matter. My hunting club was/is a pet dumping ground for the residents of Savannah Georgia and the surrounding areas.City folk learn on TV and the movies how just any animal can live fine in the woods on a river. Some even come in the summer to "Pot Farm" and make their fortune on private property. One I talked to claimed to be Peta folk, yet carried a gun to shoot people stealing his pot planted illegally on someone else's land.Weird folk, them Peta folk.alfred

I agree. I'd like to see the yotes shot with a digital camera posted on here. Then we can debate the effectiveness of a 5.1 Megapixel vs. 7.2 megapixels or 8.1. Of course, you can have a 12 gauge with buck in case it gets too agressive, but I would think a yote would be scared to death of people...

"...buckshot will take one out to about 100 yds...." If you get lucky and one of the pellets hits a vital spot. Buckshot, any buckshot, is unreliable past 35 yards.
Any ground hogs around? Varmint hunting with your deer rifle, if it's legal, is great practice for deer season.

why not use a Stevens/Savage over-under .22LR over 20ga? use CCI Velocitor and 3" #3 Buck. decisions, decisions

Works really well for me. Mine is a Savage 24F, .22 Hornet over 20 gauge. I either use 3" #2 shot or #4 buckshot. Killed a lot of called in coyotes with that heavy old gun.

Around here the serious yote hunters use 22 mags, the 17 rimfire or a shotgun. Many of them also seem to favor the SKS.,,mainly because so many of them are around.

Sure you can kill em with a 22 LR. But if you are hunting them for the pelts, then you had better shoot them in the head, otherwise they will run off an youll never find the bodies.

I just got a 223 rifle, so when I get it together and learn this rifle, thats what I will use.

I usually carry a pick handle and when I find one, I whap him over the nose with it, then I stand on his head and yank him up by the tail to break his neck. That way you dont damage the pelt.

If you are going to shoot them in close, go out and find yourself a used 25 20, 32 20 or 218 bee or the like old timey rifle sitting in some real gun shops cast off rack, they kill coyote like lightning.
