.22lr HP = coyote kill?

does a .22lr HP = coyote kill? i will be visiting family in southern ohio in a couple weeks and since nothing is really in season i figured i would call in a couple yotes:rolleyes:, but i am not sure if my .22 can takem down. i figured a hollow point could only help, but is even that powerful enough:confused:? One more thing, i know coyotes are open season all year but do you have to buy a license or anything, or just pick up a gun and go at it? thanks.

A body shot would probably result in a long slow death. The only way you could assure yourself of a clean kill is with a headshot. I would not use hollowpoints for that. I'd want a solid point to be sure of penetrating all the way through the skull.

alright, well i have three 12 gauges, would a slug be overkill? i know he would drop with that in the body, but i dont want to have a snout and tail left when i finally get up to'em.

Yeah....A slug would be overkill.....I have killed then with #6 pheasant loads at close range. A good Turkey load will do the job at reasonable rabge

22LR will definitely kill a coyote if you hit it in the head, but if you shoot it in the chest it will run about 1/4-1/2 mile before dropping and you will likely never recover it. 12 gauge with #2 birdshot will put one down within 60 yds, #4 buckshot will take one out to about 100 yds. If you want a sure-thing, drop-right-there kill, get a 223 or bigger.

alright im definately an idiot, double00 buck gotchya. never occurred to me, thought you were saying something about the licenses.

How about this?

Winchester makes some loads for Coyote hunting:

And I am extremely impressed with the long range patterns from the Federal loads with the "Flite Control" wads. You can find a variety of extra dense Flite Control loads in the large sizes as well as some buckshot. You will not believe the patterns:
http://www.federalcartridge.com/ballistics/Ammo_Search.aspx?act=choose&firearm=5&s1=1

Remington lists a "preadator" load under their waterfowl loads with T shot with #RW12VT in 3" 12 gauge.

Are you wanting to take the pelt? It's kind of hot to be taking pelts, but if you are going to, that might weigh into your gun selection.

I shot one coyote with a 22lr using Remington Yellow Jacket ammo. I was a mear 20 feet from this yote and it ran for 200+ yards before piling up on itself. Why did I do this? Well I was out at a pelletize feed mill removing some flying rats from the barns. The owner told me of a coyote stealing his Emu eggs he had lost about 20 to 30 of them to this egg suckin theif. I had not went out specifily for a yote. I was creaping around a hay barn looking for flying rats to kill. I peeked around teh corner and there he was eating an egg 20 feet away I slowly moved my gun to my shoulder and took aim for a heart lung shot, just as I was about to pull the trigger he looked up and spotted me, bang my Remington 511x made he jumped 3 feet in the air and took off like a grayhound in a race. I followed him into a walnut orchard and 200 yards away he had piled up and was dead.

Will a 22 kill a yote yes. Would I do it again? Not unless that is all I had and it was a spur of the momment kill like the one above.

Just abotu any centerfire rifle will work. Low would be a 22 hornet high would be a 30-06 sure you can use some supre mondo ultrasupreduperloudenboomer mag. This time of the years the pelts are not good they have started to shed and moms are welping pups so they are going to look a little rough. Some may schold you for sooting yotes at this time of the year. If you want pelts wait untill jan feb time frame for the thickest winter pelts.

In Washington State a license is required for any native species. Coyote can be hunted on a small game license, the cheapest. I suspect other states are similar. Any sporting goods store that sells licenses could tell you. I shot a coyote in my yard about two months ago at about 35yds with a 22mag hp. Took a shoulder shot and it rolled her and she was still in about 5 seconds on the spot. I wouldn't use less than 22mag if I could help it. HP is so no ricochet in neighborhood. Western coyotes are smaller than Eastern so I hear.

So much misinformation I can't stand it!!!

You want info on coyotes go over the the forum at www.predatormasters.com

00 Buck sucks for yotes past 20 yards. Not enough pellets
#2 shot sucks for coyotes
22's suck for coyotes.

Buckshot in sizes #3, #4 and BB is the prefered coyote load when using a shotgun. There is a brand out there called "dead coyote" that is suppose to be the best thing going. But it cost about $1 or more a shot. 100 yards my A$$. Try max of 60 yards if you are shooting 3" shells, 40-50 yards for 2 3/4".

Slugs will knock the stuffing out of a yote. This time of the year the fur sucks so saving it IS NOT and option. Who cares if you put a big hole in it.

That being said, coyote is vermin and I would try to kill one with a BB gun if thats what I had in my hand.

+1 for L Killkenny.
OO Buck has a 40 yard max effective range IMO
I carry a 12ga sometimes when i go calling. It is a back-up just in case I get lucky enough and wylie gets within 40 yds. #4 shot.Otherwise, .223.
velocity kills- 22lr aint got what it takes.

I take songdogs out to 150 yds with a .22hornet 40 gr Hp shot placement is vital(head or boiler room) I also carry a 20 gauge pump loaded with #4 buck federal premium for shots to 40 yds for the back door sneak arounds ELMOUSMC

i was planning about taking the pelt, but i guess it is a little hot to messing with that. i never even thought of the winter coat coming off. so no yotes for me. this is why i ask you guys though, you'll tell me everything i didnt think of. i was just excited to hunt something other than deer for once, but with every new hunt you learn a million new tips:cool:. the families property im going to, i cant imagine them being okay with me killing a coyote just because its a varmint. the whole idea came about, because they only go down a few times a year. when they get down all the neighbors say you should've heard the dogs singing the other nights, but they never howl while they're down there. so they talked me into buying a call for them to see if i could get'em in. i figured if im buying a call i might as well put it to good use. plus like i said i have only hunted deer and i was looking to expand into other hunting seasons. i guess i have the call now, and some input on hunting times and ammo, so i should be prepared when the right time comes around. thanks guys.

The effectiveness of any of the above-mentioned guns varies with distance--just as always. And with shotguns, choke is about as important as shot size.

A head shot with a .22 LR to maybe 50 yards. Full choke, a 12-gauge with most anything to at least 25 or 30 yards. Double ought? I dunno. 40 yards or so? To use slugs means some practice beforehand, of course. Some sort of sight-in, or it's quite easily a wasted shot.

Anecdote: My ancient Model 12 is "ultra-full choke" with plastic shells. I once made a bobcat DRT with high-brass 7-1/2 at 25 yards. But dove hunting with that gun isn't a lot better than using a rifle. :)

Pelts aren't worth much in summer. I generally just cut off the tail, skin it out and salt it, and nail it to a porch post.

If your going to do it, use CCI velocitors, and only at close range. Velocitors are the only .22lr round that will get close to a .22 magnum in preformance. Usually .22mags is the minimum caliber for Coyote

There is no law against shooting the called in 'yotes with a digital camera... Heck even the most rabid bunny kicker would do it...
Than ya'll can have the images enlarged by a pro outfit and put them up thru out the house. If you can call them in to where there are obvious domestic items in the shot there is no disputing your calling ability. And it will also be a reminder to those that visit to keep fi-fi and the carpet sharks reighned in during evening hours...
Best of luck and "happy hunting"
Brent
